We are seeking a highly motivated individual to work alongside the Industry Leader, AVP Programs & Associations to assist with the administration of day-to-day operations of the wholesale/MGA division, supervision of team of underwriters and underwriting assistants, and management of policy management system.

The successful candidate would be responsible for the management of designated underwriting authority on all in- house programs underwritten or managed by Cowan Insurance Group. This individual will be accountable for the income statement for the team to ensure revenue and expense targets are met. Responsible for underwriting of all programs distributed direct to client, and wholesale programs distributed via broker network. Role includes successful development and rollout of new in -house programs, as well as growth and profitability of existing programs.

Key Responsibilities:
Underwriting

Leading the team in pursuit of profitable growth, operational excellence and superior technical underwriting
Engaging, coaching, motivating and mentoring the team
Fostering positive working relationships to deliver exceptional customer service to all stakeholders
Participating in projects and special initiatives
Creating and Maintaining of all program manuals, rating and underwriting guidelines and updates as required
Completing regular audits to ensure underwriting guidelines are being followed
Participating with leadership in carrier management, including Lloyds
Putting in place UW tools required to be successful such as ITV tools, creation of supplemental applications, etc.
Continuous process improvement to ensure optimal operational efficiency
Ensure department targets are met to positively contribute to overall corporate results
Ability to hold a senior level of underwriting authority and to underwrite complex risks

Business Development

Relationship management of sub – broker network in conjunction with Business Development, including determining effectiveness of events, performing due diligence on new broker partners, and broker management
Leading role in carrier relationship building
Staying on top of trends in the MGA space, including bringing forward suggestions for changes to strategy
Business development of programs to promote growth with brokers (Cowan and sub broker network)
Seeking feedback to refresh existing products
Accountable for new product rollout strategies

What does it take?

Technical knowledge of Property & Casualty insurance in Commercial Lines including CAIB, CIP or CRM designation (knowledge of Personal Lines would be an asset)
University degree in Business Administration an asset
Previous experience managing people
Strong leadership abilities to consistently execute on key initiatives
Understanding of policy wordings, pricing and establishing underwriting authorities
Excellent relationship/negotiations skills
Creative problems solving abilities
Energetic, self‐motivated and comfortable with changes
Ability to multi-task, be flexible, and move from one priority to another while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Strong communication (verbal/written), negotiation and interpersonal skills
Knowledge and experience with broker management systems and policy management systems, or a desire to learn
RIBO license or ability to obtain license
Ability to manage a book of business and achieve/exceed business plan
