Position Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Project Accounting, the Senior Project Accountant will be responsible for accounting, budgeting, loan draws, reconciliations, cash flow forecast and detailed project reporting for assigned low-rise, high-rise and land development projects. This will also include providing accurate and timely information to the financial reporting and finance teams, applying and adhering to company policies as well as maintaining and adhering to internal control.

Key Functions & Duties:
Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Project Accounting/Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and book entries for low-rise closings for revenue
  • Calculate and record inter-company loan interest
  • Calculate and book development, construction management and guarantee fees
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations
  • Record monthly entries for cost of sales, marketing expenses and costs to complete
  • Reconcile customer deposits
  • Prepare annual financial statements including supporting working paper files for submission to auditors and assist with audit queries
Cash Flow Support/Reporting

  • Prepare schedule for recoveries from projects on biweekly basis
  • Prepare and maintain monthly project cash flow forecast for assigned projects
  • Prepare and submit loan draw/cash call reports to lenders/cost consultants along with backup detail. Respond to all related queries and make sure funds are received on a timely basis
Project Performance

  • Prepare and issue monthly report for detailed cost of sales and margin analysis with variance explanations
  • Liaise with operations to provide bimonthly/quarterly project analysis including variance analysis and budget updates
  • Monitor monthly activity and maintain a strong understanding of project status

  • Continually monitor and review accounting processes and procedures and recommend changes as appropriate to improve internal controls and/or efficiencies
  • Other related duties as requested
Skills and Qualifications

  • Accounting designation CA/CGA/CMA, or final stages of completion
  • Minimum 5 years of accounting, budgeting and cash flow experience with new home building industry experience
  • Experience in a similar project accounting role an asset
  • Experience using NEWSTAR an asset
  • Exceptional computer skills including advanced Excel
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Attention to detail in all areas of work
  • Good problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, practices and applications
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
