What is the opportunity?

The Law Group in Toronto has a new opening in the Digital legal team, reporting directly to Senior Counsel (Lead, Digital) and accountable to Vice President & Associate General Counsel, Innovation in achieving the business and operational goals, and the strategic priorities of the Law Group, in particular the performance commitments of solution oriented advice.

What will you do?

Act as first point of contact and digital specialist, providing legal counsel on a wide range of complex legal and regulatory matters relating to digital initiatives and product development
Provide legal support and thought leadership for emerging technology matters, including artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain technology and crypto assets
Collaborate with product lawyers for the various digital projects; analyze legal risks in an evolving and fast paced environment
Develop tools and resources for product lawyers to ensure a consistent and methodical approach to digital law issues including enforcement
Advise on legal and regulatory impacts on business strategy, as well as opportunities for business-driven amendments to law
Identify strategic business opportunities for the bank based on legal developments
Negotiate and act as primary Law Group point of contact for digital, collaboration and other related third party contracts; liaise and collaborate with members of the Law Group around the world and external counsel to provide assistance with global initiatives
Draft client agreements, terms and conditions and other collateral material relating to digital banking, mobile apps, public websites and online portals

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

Law degree (Common Law and/or Civil Law), with at least 5+ years of experience in providing legal advice in related fields
High proficiency in specialized and varied areas of law, particularly in laws applicable to e-commerce, consumer protection, privacy, Internet, mobile, emerging technology and contract law
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in teams that are diverse and multi-disciplinary; ability to communicate effectively and concisely and influence in a variety of formats and venues
Self-motivated attitude; high degree of autonomy and commitment; strong organizational skills; ability to analyze legal risk in context of business realities; ability to work with the business to brainstorm innovative solutions and client centric designs
Constructive curiosity in understanding new technology developments and creativity in applying legal concepts

Nice-to-have

Expertise in banking and financial services
Deep understanding of consumer regulatory issues
Project management skills
Technology related education or experience (e.g., computer engineering); general corporate law background
