Reporting to the Health and Safety Supervisor, the Occupational Hygienist is responsible for maintaining and implementing exposure reduction strategies in the Occupational Health and Hygiene programs at Teck’s Elkview Operation.
Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
Develop, recommend, implement, and maintain policies, programs, and procedures to effectively protect the health of employees
Initiate, develop, and implement physical and chemical exposure monitoring and assessment studies, evaluate and interpret the data obtained from such studies, and recommend mitigation programs
Provide leadership in developing and implementing property wide policies and programs to address occupational health concerns
Initiate and coordinate periodic audits of hygiene and occupational health programs and ensure monitoring and reporting programs meet QA/QC and documentation standards
Provide technical training and informational presentations to keep employees and management aware of hygiene and occupational health concerns, programs, and regulatory issues
Keep informed and up to date with new developments in the field of occupational hygiene and health and safety legislation, and communicate these to the Health and Safety group to increase the effectiveness of the monitoring programs
Coach and guide members of the Health and Safety team to improve knowledge and application in occupational hygiene protocols and practice
Evaluate the effectiveness and adequacy of existing occupational health programs, report findings to management and recommend improvements
Represent Elkview Operations and Teck on stakeholder groups and maintain a constructive liaison with regulatory agencies and the union on matters respecting occupational health and hygiene issues
Degree in Occupational Hygiene or Health and Safety
Hold, or be working towards attaining, a Certified Industrial Hygienist Certificate from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, or be working towards becoming a Registered Occupational Hygienist, registered with the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists. Equivalent certification in occupational hygiene recognized by the local authority will also be considered
Minimum five years’ of experience related to the control of occupational exposures in a mining or heavy industry, union and non-union environment
Strong computer skills, particularly with the Microsoft Office Suite package and experience with use of Health and Hygiene software solutions such as Cority
Strong communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills
Highly motivated safety leader
Ability to problem solve, multi task, and keep accurate records
