Project Controller

Tradesmen is currently accepting resumes for a Planner/Scheduler for various locations within Alberta and BC.

Reports to Project Manager and Project Controls Manager


This Project Controller position will be responsible for all general Project Controls functions pertaining to a specific project. Included in these duties: cost control, scheduling, progressing, change management, reporting, and other general business services functions as required. With the support of the Project Controls Lead, the successful candidate will be help create the WBS, CBS, cost codes, and reports for the project. This position is responsible for the ongoing maintenance, updating, and timely submission of all reports, including: progress curves, schedules, construction narratives, and other ad-hoc reports as required.

The individual needs to be well versed in the various software packages required to do detailed cost reporting. This reporting includes the alignment of the ERP system to the actual project estimate and costs and the ability to identify potential project cost risks, with effective analysis and communication of those risks. This position will be working closely with Project Management, other Project Controls personnel, and the Project Administrator to complete all tasks. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to assist with the Project Administration tasks from time to time (i.e. days off coverage).

This is a field-based position and may be located throughout Alberta and British Columbia.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Maintain and update analytical and cost tracking tools using Excel, and the ERP and job costing software applications.
  • Validate all financial records associated with the project.
  • Analyze project cost for potential overruns and present issues to management in a comprehensive, complete and timely fashion.
  • Update, review, and submit project reports, including: progress, quantities, schedules, and construction narratives.
  • Manage the change order process, including: creation, review (with management), submission, reporting, and billing.
  • Maintain and update the project schedule.
  • Assist with Project Administration functions as required.


  • Relevant experience of 5-7 years field project controls experience required.
  • Post-secondary training, including a degree or diploma is an asset. Relevant project management training (with proper experience) will also be considered, including: PMP, AACE training, CCP, trade ticket, or other appropriate certification.
  • Advanced ability to operate MS Office products, primarily Excel.
  • Experience with Primavera (P6) and Microsoft Projects considered and asset.
  • Operational understanding of financial software applications and integrated ERP.
  • Strong understanding of project life cycle for projects related to the Oil and Gas, Forestry, Mining and Heavy Industrial industries.
  • Good communication skills and interpersonal skills at all levels, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to work with all stakeholders, including: management, clients, internal customers, and trade people.
  • Strong problem solving, and prioritization skills required.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Language skills: must be able to communicate fluently in English, both written and verbal.
