Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Mohawk Family Services Program Manager, the Child and Youth Worker will be responsible for assisting in the provision of services to families with children and youth ages 0-18 in the community of Tyendinaga. The key focus of this position will be providing assistance to families who have a demonstrated need that may affect their ability to effectively parent and maintain their relationship with their children or youth, which could affect the safety of the children in the family home, or their ability to return to the family home. They will work collaboratively with members of the team, community and other programs to ensure all clients receive support in a nurturing, supportive and non-judgmental fashion. The Child and Youth Worker will ensure the current developmental needs of children in his/her care are met by actively participating in the case planning, which includes assessment and treatment of issues that affect the family functioning. This worker should possess the physical ability to provide in-home services and be able to lift up to 40 pounds. This worker will provide case updates to other shared workers, and keep clear case notes in an organized file management system. The Child and Youth Worker will carry a case load of 15 -20 families who require their support and is expected to work with the families in their homes. There will be a need for time flexibility, and travel, as appointments may be out of the area or be during the early morning, evenings or weekends. The Child and Youth Worker will not be responsible for after-hours coverage for Mohawk Family Services.

Essential Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited College program with a three-year Child and Youth Worker diploma, or the equivalent.
  • Working level knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act and Bill 210.
  • Sound knowledge of behavioural modification techniques used to help children and youth modify behaviour.
  • Refined risk assessment and problem solving skills.
  • Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to be sensitive to difficult situations that require non-violent crisis intervention skills.
  • Good understanding of Mental Health symptoms and how Mental Health issues affect families.
  • Non-judgmental outlook, focused on helping families make positive gains.
  • Current CPR/First Aid and AED certification.
  • Valid Drivers’ License, vehicle and adequate insurance.
  • Must be able to provide a clear Vulnerable Sector check.

Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • At least two years of experience in the field of child and youth worker, family service, or personal support worker services.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and case management skills related to supporting families.
  • Knowledge and Respect for Mohawk community, the culture, the families, and of community issues, customary best practices, and local resources.
  • Ability to motivate families and work together with them to achieve goals.
  • Knowledge of how to handle a crisis situation related to domestic violence, sexual abuse, addictions, and the protection of children and families.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team building skills, including a positive and cheerful attitude.
  • Good computer skills including excel, word and outlook.
  • Proficient written, communication skills, as well as negotiation and mediation skills.
  • Provide high level of confidentiality, including empathy for clients and client situations.
  • Non-judgmental outlook, focused on helping families make positive gains.
