Role Summary:

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Manager, Business Development (MBD) is responsible for the development and execution of the overall strategic marketing and business development plan and will lead the sales and marketing team to ensure achievement of the budgeted financial results. The MBD is also responsible for the management of key distribution relationships, increasing penetration, gathering market intelligence and providing product development ideas based on unserved market needs. The MBD will work closely with the Manager, Administration and Compliance and the Manager, Underwriting and Claims Services, as an integral part of the Hunter McCorquodale leadership team.

Principal Accountabilities:

The Manager, Business Development will hold primary national responsibility for:

  • Developing the overall sales and marketing strategy to achieve budgeted financial results
  • Fostering the potential of existing direct advisor, National Account and MGA distribution relationships
  • Identifying and developing new relationships in our target markets
  • Leading and managing the sales and marketing team to ensure timely and accurate quotes to advisors
  • Becoming proficient in quoting all HM products with the support of the sales and underwriting teams
  • Managing large key accounts in co-ordination with the administration and underwriting teams
  • Conducting appropriate seminars and workshops to present products and sales concepts
  • Providing case support to insurance advisors as required to close key accounts
  • Participating in industry, NA or MGA events to promote HM products and enhance brand awareness and industry presence
  • Providing monthly sales and marketing reports to the management team
  • Adhering to required legislation in regards to safeguarding the privacy of client information, conflicts of interest, anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist funding legislation

Competencies:

  • Subject matter expert in the field of special risk Life and Accident & Health insurance products with a deep knowledge of life and/or disability product sales, distribution, claims and/or underwriting
  • Experience in the development and execution of a comprehensive strategic marketing, sales and business development plan for the distribution of insurance products
  • Demonstrated business relationship management success preferable at the senior advisor, MGA or National Account level
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including a strong ability to work in a collaborative team environment;
  • Entrepreneurial, creative thinker and problem solver with a high level of customer service orientation;
  • Results and action orientation, self-motivation, and client-focus
  • Strong business communication skills both verbal and written
  • Strong presentation skills both live and web-based
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage and inspire a dedicated sales and marketing team
  • Experience in budgeting and financial analysis of product lines

Desired Assets:

  • Minimum 5 years experience in a sales or business development role in life or living benefits insurance
  • Undergraduate degree or higher in business or marketing related studies or equivalent work experience
  • Superior knowledge of Canadian life and disability products, sales strategies and the financial services industry
  • A valid industry designation or are working towards it (CLU, CFP, CH.F.C.)
  • A valid LLQP license
  • High degree of proficiency in PC applications including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint) along with social media and digital technology skills

Preference Given to Applicants With:

  • An established network of advanced level retail advisors in the business owner or high net worth market segments
  • Experience in Guaranteed Issue Disability (multi-life) executive disability plans
  • LLQP license in multiple jurisdictions including Quebec
  • Bilingual French capability both verbal and written
  • Experience working in a Lloyd’s Coverholder operation
  • Knowledge of digital marketing techniques and technology
