Aviva Canada Inc. has an excellent opportunity in our Small Medium and Enterprise (SME) commercial insurance business unit. Our Vancouver, Commercial Insurance branch is seeking an engaging leader with a real passion for developing talent, and with a focus on results and relationships. Reporting to the Commercial Lines AVP, as a leader in the branch you have the opportunity to create legacy and contribute to our employee investment and the customer experience.

As a Commercial Insurance Unit Manager, you will be responsible to provide leadership to a commercial team of talented underwriters passionate about Property, Casualty, and Auto. You will be accountable to engage with our talent as a team, and one-on-one leadership, provide training, development, monitoring and measuring of individual and team results, collaborating on team and branch objectives, and execution of various strategies. As the leader, you will also ensure that underwriting quality and service standards within the team meet and/or exceed corporate and branch objectives.

You will model, mentor, teach and cultivate outstanding broker relationships, making Aviva the market of choice to build mutually profitable partnerships.
You will be involved in the underwriting, assessment, and evaluation of new and existing commercial lines accounts as necessary to assist the underwriting team.
You will motivate and guide the quality of underwriting.
You conduct file reviews in accordance with governance standards as required.
You will work collaboratively with your peers, specialists, and the AVP branch leader to create excellence in our approach, and in alignment with Aviva strategies and guidelines.
You will help kill complexity by striving for continuous efficiency and improvement.
You will engage, direct and motivate your staff through regular huddles, meetings and clear communication.
You will strive for continuous professional growth and learning, by being engaged to learn and understand our business.
You will treat your teams book like your own business and show keen interest, and a proactive approach to consistently identifying and measuring KPI’s, and provide regular insight to staff, peers and the AVP branch leader, to help identify deficiencies and opportunities on an ongoing basis.

Required Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills:
Minimum 5 – 10 years’ experience in commercial insurance, ideally in underwriting risk in Property/Casualty. Broker or other relevant experience will be considered if progressive increased responsibility is shown.
Solid understanding of the operation of core commercial P&C coverage and Aviva wordings
Knowledge of competitor wordings or appetite an asset
Proven and demonstrable leadership abilities
Good business insights and real passion for relationship management
Excellent underwriting skills with knowledge of rating and risk selection.
Ability to develop strong business relationships, externally with brokers and internally with other areas of Aviva (e.g. National Commercial Insurance – Head Office Underwriting).
Strong organizational skills showing attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines.
Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
Operational organization, including the ability to understand numbers and create metrics that measure outcomes.
Exceptional communication skills and confidence delivering sometimes unpopular messages
Experience with Aviva systems (RTM and RTG) is an asset
Post-Secondary education or equivalent practical experience
Successful completion of the Insurance Institute FCIP certification, or in progress is ideal
