Chef -Full time at Garrison Location

The Position

As the community Chef you are responsible for the effective and efficient management of all aspects of the food and beverage operations in line with our vision of “transforming the experience of aging”. You will maintain positive relationships with residents, families and the neighbouring community, and will demonstrate leadership on a daily basis by embracing the corporate philosophy and culture of our operations.

As Chef you will ensure that standards of hygiene and food service are met and all operations comply with United Active Living policy and applicable legislation, regulations and standards.

Responsibilities

1) Food Services Management:

In conjunction with the Food Services Manager, plan menus for Dining room and Bistro that reflect United’s commitment to choice, value and quality, while meeting the nutritional needs and tastes of residents.

Supervise the preparation of menu items to ensure quality standards are maintained, portions are appropriate and wastage is minimized.

Maintain inventory to ensure adequate supply levels to prepare meals.

Manage the purchasing system for the community.

Ensure sanitation, OHS, and safe food handling legislation are met on a daily basis.

Seek out resident feedback on food quality, preferences and recipes, and act to resolve any customer service issues which may arise.

Collaborate with all managers, and specifically the Care Manager to deliver menu items which meets residents’ needs.

2) Leadership:

Ensure that all Safety and HR related legislation, processes, and procedures are understood, adhered to, and maintained by Food Services Staff.

Liaise with corporate HR on a recruiting and employee relations.

Facilitate collaborative communication between management, departments, staff and clients, and acts to resolve miscommunications.

Promote and demonstrate a continuous learning philosophy, with the objective of improving the quality of care and services across the facility.

Design and deliver appropriate orientation and on-going staff education opportunities, in collaboration with managers and staff.

Conduct performance evaluations of department staff and provides support and guidance where necessary to staff.

3) Financial Resource Management:

In conjunction with the Food Services Manager, develop and maintain the annual operating budget.

Work in collaboration with managers, and the corporate accounting department in the execution of these responsibilities.

4) Other Duties

Ensure that appropriate documentation and record keeping is maintained in accordance with corporate policy, and all federal and provincial legislation, as it pertains to the facility.

Oversee the community Quality Enhancement process and reporting, including scheduling and conducting the semi-annual department review.

Collaborate with all managers to ensure the delivery of services within all aspects of the operation is in alignment with the corporate vision, mission and goals.

Listen to staff and residents’ concerns, as well as the concerns of residents’ family members, as they pertain to the delivery of services to clients, and responds in a timely fashion, and in accordance with the corporate vision, mission and values.

Participate in activities and events of the community, including welcoming and greeting to new residents and their families.

Actively seek opportunities to build and maintain relationships based on trust and mutual respect with all managers, staff, residents and the community at large.

Seek out opportunities to regularly interact with residents.

Support and facilitates the effective functioning of the Town Hall

Qualifications

Red Seal certified Chef is preferred

Post-secondary education as a chef

3-5 years of management experience, including supervision of staff, preferably in an Assisted Living or Full Service Retirement setting.

Experience with client interaction in a community setting.
