The Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP) is Canada’s national organization of pharmacists committed to patient care through the advancement of safe, effective medication use in hospitals and other collaborative healthcare settings. CSHP represents the interests of its members through education, advocacy, information sharing, promotion of best practices, and facilitation of research. By listening to the experiences and expectations of patients and the pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who care for them, CSHP develops and provides the support, tools, and resources needed to improve healthcare in Canada.

We are looking for a proactive and creative individual who is capable of applying creative intelligence to realize CSHPs Strategy Towards Sustainability. Under the direction of the Director, Marketing and Communications, the Marketing and Communications Manager will plan and execute marketing and communications strategies with the ultimate aim of increasing revenues, elevating the member value proposition, and increasing the public profile and brand of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP).

The incumbent will work in close collaboration with volunteer counterparts in provincial branches, ensuring coordination, leveraging branch’s efforts and facilitating the adoption of best practices. The incumbent will also work in a cross-functional capacity with membership, publications, professional practice, corporate services and other organizational areas.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Marketing

Working with the Director of Marketing and Communications, identifies and articulates the member value journey, and ensures it is reflected on/supported by the CSHP website, in communications plans, social media channels and other marketing assets

Proactively consults with stakeholders to identify needs, gaps, and the best opportunities to contribute towards CSHP’s strategic objectives

Recommends, develops and executes marketing communications plans that generate/nurture membership leads, build brand awareness and understanding and member education/retention

Develops and implements successful marketing campaigns. Determines and advises on possible content messaging, offers, targets and calls to action

Liaises with external agencies in development of offline and online tactical marketing communications

Using Google Analytics, MailChimp, and social media analytics, continually monitors, analyzes and evaluates success (results and statistics, tracking, and determines what improvements need to be made) to campaign changes, budget reallocations, new approaches, revised targeting, etc.

Proven ability to write, edit and produce on a consistent basis, highly effective customer-focused marketing messages


Creates, curates and manages all public facing communications

Identifies opportunities for member-centric story ideas. Designs editorial content strategy. Prepares communications plans and key messages for CSHP integrated marketing and communications campaigns

Works closely with the publications team members to implement best practices on information sharing to subscribers of our biweekly communications, the Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy (CJHP), and the weekly “Interactions” e-newsletter

Promotes CSHP events and products (e.g., guidelines, conferences) to stakeholders

Creates and updates communications materials – fact sheets, presentations, and other materials as necessary to help disseminate CSHP messages

Fields media inquiries. Writes press releases as required

Ensures any communications and marketing collateral is on-brand and adheres to CSHP brand guidelines

Social Media

Develops the annual strategy for social and traditional media opportunities

Develops, executes and manages social media campaigns

Monitors, listens and cultivates online community engagement

Analyzes and evaluates both existing and potential social media activities and strategies

Identifies and interprets social media trends

Delivers social media monitoring reports for senior management to track ROI (return on investment) across different channels

Researches and proposes ways to apply social media programming as a marketing tool towards such applications as corporate branding, advocacy, communications, membership recruitment and retention and fundraising


Screening Criteria

Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing or communications or equivalent combination of education and work experience

Minimum 5 years’ experience in marketing communications role, preferably in a member-based non-profit or association setting

Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)

Ability to strike and manage a budget, track budget utilization on a regular basis and provide forecasts to senior management for decision-making purposes


Knowledge of MailChimp automated marketing

Knowledge of iMIS software by ASI or another non-profit, association and membership software

Knowledge of Drupal content management system

Knowledge of InDesign graphic design software

Collaborates With

Line reporting is directly to the Director, Marketing and Communications

Senior management to prepare and implement communications plans, to identify emerging issues, to market and promote priority CSHP programs and services

Department managers to ensure full integration of CSHP objectives and messages across all units

Volunteers to identify and prepare responses to emerging issues, to respond to media and public inquiries, to support CSHP leaders in their representational role, to manage projects arising out of working groups and committees
