The VP, Senior Portfolio Consultant within the Global Portfolio Consulting Services (PCS) team is responsible for partnering directly with intermediary clients and advisors (our clients) by assisting with their portfolio construction needs. The goal is to help our clients build their best portfolio by providing expert investment counsel thru the detailed analysis of their macro view, asset allocation and security selection.

The VP, Senior Portfolio Consultant will partner with the Franklin Templeton Investments distribution team and financial advisors to solve investment problems such as maximizing return, managing risk, minimizing downside, optimizing diversification and improving efficiency/utility.

What are the ongoing responsibilities of a VP, Senior Portfolio Consultant?

Utilizing the department’s industry leading software, the VP, Senior Portfolio Consultant will help advisors and financial intermediaries meet their client’s investment objectives and goals by:

Providing insight and expertise into portfolio construction and modern asset allocation tactics specific to a financial advisors’ practice.

Understanding and synthesizing viewpoints from:
Client, and/or their firm

Global capital markets
Global economy

Expertise of Franklin Templeton asset managers

Investment management industry at large

Promoting best practices around risk management through analytics such as standard deviation, Value-at-Risk, estimated tail loss/return and other metrics.

Evaluating and identifying suitable investment strategies which improve portfolio outcomes utilizing the widest universe of investment vehicles, which may or may not, include Franklin Templeton offerings.

Other Activities

The position will require expert knowledge of Franklin Templeton Investment products, services and capabilities, along with in-depth competitor knowledge.

Expand and improve PCS adoption by the Canadian retail sales organization.

Develop thought leadership pieces on portfolio construction and goals-based planning.

Provide ongoing portfolio construction, asset allocation and other training to internal partners.

Partner with the Head of Global Portfolio Consulting on the portfolio construction retail advisory strategy in Canada.

Collaborate with other Franklin Templeton Investments senior executives across product strategy, portfolio management, sales management and executive leadership.

Support Global Product Strategy in the development of new strategies designed to meet client-specific objectives and support the commercialization of existing strategies using portfolio analytics.

Mentor and train PCS staff where appropriate on all aspects of the investment management industry.

What ideal qualifications, skills and experience would help someone to be successful?

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Finance or Economics, or related field required
CFA Charter holder or equivalent postgraduate degree strongly preferred
Completion of Canadian Securities Course
10-15 years’ experience related to portfolio construction, product management or other related experience
Strong communications and presentation skills on complex topics to audiences with varying degrees of understanding (Client-facing experience)

Proficiency in various risk-based research systems and reporting required (ex. Morningstar Direct, Cognity, FactSet, MPI Stylus, Bloomberg

Excellent problem solving and analytical thinking abilities

Knowledge of and ability to use quantitative tools and techniques to measure and analyze risks

Ability to articulate investment ideas and discuss relevance to market professionals
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with clients and internal partners
Strong project management skills, ability to multi-task, and meet deadlines
Ability to travel

Additionally, the ideal candidate will have command of the following investment areas:

Global capital markets including equity, fixed income, currencies, commodities & alternatives/derivatives

Global economics such as GDP, employment, interest rates, inflation, central bank policies and function, imports/exports, spending by consumer, business, government, etc.

Modern portfolio construction tactics and techniques, including asset class risk and return dynamics

Quantitative methods and financial statistics

General capital & economic market history, especially details around extraordinary events, their cause and resolution
