Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director, Curriculum Development and Instructional Design the Instructional Designer and Curriculum Developer works closely with the undergraduate faculty to design courses that support active learning using best online instructional practices and learning technologies. The Instructional Designer and Curriculum Developer is also responsible for implementing guidelines and setting standards for the structure and overall quality of course materials. In this position, the incumbent is responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of a wide range of courses and their components. This involves reviewing and assessing courses, ensuring that they are developed using sound design and development practices.
Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate with faculty to design and implement courses offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science.
  • Provide advice about emerging trends, research-based approaches and quality standards for the development and delivery of courses designed to encourage active student learning, participation and overall engagement.
  • Create evaluation tools and analyze pre-existing data received from course evaluations to make recommendations to the instructor, as appropriate, about possible improvements.
  • Provide training and support regarding teaching strategies, learning activities, assessments, and the integration of appropriate learning technologies.
  • Develop, or assist with, instructional seminars for instructors addressing best practices.
  • Identify research in support of teaching and learning.
  • Respond to emerging needs with respect to classroom support of instructors and provide consultative services to address those needs.
  • Act as the project manager for course design and delivery. This includes researching new learning delivery models and assessing which models are appropriate to a given scenario with respect to educational requirements, resources and budgetary constraints.
  • Provide work direction, guidance and expertise to the production team when building the components of the course, and implementing learning activities/tasks, building assessments and developing digital content from source materials in appropriate media format.
  • Liaise with copyright librarian to identify appropriate digital resources for faculty to consider in their course, ensure copyright permissions are secured for each course developed, and document the use of copyright items.
  • Work with the management team to identify courses to be re-offered and improved for each term and new courses to be developed.
  • Advise on inclusive design practices to ensure a positive experience for marginalized groups and a reduced need for individual accommodations for those with learning difficulties.
  • Provide advice on how to improve accessibility in courses, and ensure courses are compliant with relevant legislation (e.g. Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act).
  • Provide advice to faculty about emerging trends and industry standards for the development and delivery of courses, accounting for designated learning outcomes as articulated by faculty.
  • Work with individual researchers or research teams on the submission of competitive funding applications to identify specific funding opportunities that incorporate blended learning. This includes working closely with the research team, offering careful and detailed review of draft applications and assisting in the writing of some portions of the grant applications as required.
  • Undertake and facilitate mapping, assessment, and evaluation of student learning and engagement outcome data and create reports on impact of course design and delivery supports to faculty. Make recommendations to the Manager or instructor, as appropriate, about possible improvements.
  • Lead or support special projects as required.
  • Other duties as required in support of the Office.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in a field related to education.
  • 2 years’ experience working in online/blended learning.
  • 2 years’ experience in a teaching or corporate training environment.
  • 5 years’ experience in (program-level) curriculum and (course-level) instructional design
  • Knowledge of learning technologies and how to use them effectively in course design.
  • Experience and competence in leading multiple projects, balancing competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of universal design for learning and other accessibility principles.
  • Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL SKILLS:
  • Project Management Skills: Ability to identify opportunities, coordinate projects, monitor and update project tasks and timelines. Ensure that faculty meet the timelines for development so that courses will be ready for start of term.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work with many different individuals across the university and build strong relationships (staff, instructors, instructional designers and students). Must be an excellent team player and have the ability to work simultaneously with many individuals and departments to accomplish tasks.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and oral communication skills. Capable of writing and editing course related materials on various platforms. Contribute to Course Production discussions, and pursue ongoing communication with instructors and other instructional designers during course development and revisions. Able to discuss teaching and learning theories.
  • Technical Skills: Excellent computer skills and ability to readily learn new applications. Knowledge of instructional design methods and models and technology supports for teaching and learning such as web conferencing, podcasting, etc. Able to work within templates within Learning Management Systems (LMS) and awareness of potentials and limits with LMS. Implement learning activities/tasks, build assessment mechanisms, and develop digital content from source materials.
  • Time Management Skills: Ability to effectively coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, ability to stay focused on high impact initiatives. Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision. The incumbent is expected to handle multiple priorities and projects at the same time.
DECISION MAKING:
  • Utilizes own judgment to determine strengths and weaknesses of courses.
  • Makes recommendations to improve the structure and quality of courses on the basis of best practices and feedback from students and instructors.
  • Determines best tools and applications for an effective teaching and learning environment.
  • Recommends appropriate policy, procedures and guidelines that apply to distance course authors.
  • Decide when intervention or support is needed to meet completion deadlines.
  • Determine alternate design strategies if copyright issues are restrictive to use.
  • Determine method to employ in analysis, synthesis, and clarification of information.
  • Determine content, format, and delivery of workshops.
  • Determine how to design and run training programs.
  • Identify and recommend concrete changes/additions/deletions that are required to improve the probability of success of a particular funding application, and how best to provide related feedback to faculty members and senior administrators.
  • Determine how to proceed and who to work with on special projects.
