Hiya! We’re Radical I/O, a people-first enterprise software development consultancy and lab that develops technology with purpose. We work with cities and organizations to develop meaningful, data-driven solutions that provide people with easy access to information, when and where they need it.

We're on the lookout for two (2) contract fullstack web developers (intermediate to senior) to work directly on site at our client's location in Richmond, BC for 6 months starting in the last week of November. While these are contract positions to start, they also have the opportunity to lead to permanent employee roles with us at Radical depending on your future career goals.

We are particularly hiring people who are skilled in the backend/middleware (polyglots welcome in Java/Spring/Hibernate, JavaScript and NodeJS, and RESTful API web services), but having some frontend skills in Angular and React are definitely welcome. Of course you get bonus points if you also have experience with Jenkins & CI integration, ELK stack, and Maven build scripts.

We are actively working towards changing the gender imbalance in the tech industry, and we highly encourage teammates whose identities are under-represented in tech to apply. If you don’t match 100% of the job requirements, but have awesome life-skills, are passionate about what you do and eager to learn, we also want to hear from you. We look beyond cookie-cutter requirements and instead focus on your potential. We hire skilled teammates who are hungry to learn and grow, and who really care about the quality of work they produce.

To become a fullstack developer with Radical I/O and our clients, we'd love to see your experience in (and/or willingness to learn) as much of the following as possible:

backend and middleware app development using Java, NodeJS, or .NET/C# (depending on our clients' needs, you might switch between projects that require Java vs JavaScript vs .NET skills)
Java: J2EE/J2SE and Spring frameworks; messaging and JMS; JDBC, JPA/Hibernate, ORM; knowledge of design patterns, and Dependency Injection vs. Inversion of Control concepts
popular frontend JavaScript frameworks like React, Vue, Angular, etc
NodeJS/Javascript/Typescript, related toolsets and frameworks such as Hapi
RESTful, JSON, GraphQL API design & development, and API Gateways
Databases: NoSQL databases like MongoDB, and Relational databases, like MySQL/MariaDB, Oracle, MS SQL Server
data integrations between various legacy on-premise systems, SAAS apps, and APIs
having Git repos as your version control of choice

We also look for people who:
have 4+ years of software development experience
possess a university degree in computer science, engineering or related field, or a combination of experience and relevant certificates/learning/courses.
write clean code, have written unit tests, and who adhere to effective software design principles
have worked within agile processes like Scrum or Kanban, and used tools like JIRA or similar
are comfortable working professionally with clients in varying industries
are problem-solvers, comfortable with ambiguity and unknowns, and love continuously learning
communicate and collaborate well and often

BONUS (these are nice to have's and not required items, but feel free to highlight any of these items you also know):

Security and Identity management: IAM, SSO, User directories, Federated Identity, OAuth, security tokens, TLS, public and private keys; including platforms like ForgeRock
Docker containerization and deployment
AWS and/or Azure and/or GCP cloud services
Using build tools such as Ant, Maven, or Gradle, and working with continuous integration tools (like Jenkins) and processes, and using the ELK stack
Terraform infrastructure as code
Event Streaming: Kafka, Flink, Spark
Iot Technologies: MQTT and on device software, and the concept of Digital Twins
Integration technologies and ESB platform experience, like TIBCO, Mulesoft, and others
Machine Learning: Python, Jupiter, OpenCV, Data Science
An interest in growing your career and professional network by writing white papers and blog posts, and speaking on panels
A desire to build community and/or make a difference in the world (be sure to include more info about this in the summary section or your cover letter)
Even if we don't call you in for an interview right away, we often have projects start fairly quickly with new clients, so we will always look through our applicant database first. We'd also love to keep a small roster of people we trust and who we can easily reach out to during these times.

As mentioned earlier, after this initial 6-month contract, there may also be the opportunity to then work directly in our team at Radical's office, either as a contractor (if you prefer that arrangement) or as a permanent employee (depending on your goals). Therefore, we thought we'd also share more about us here for your information.

We offer a flexible and inclusive space to work where we welcome your unique self. For those who become permanent employees of Radical, you can expect to receive these other benefits:

Radical uses an API-centric approach to everything we do. As a team, we are experts in applications spanning across web, mobile, and voice technologies. Integrating AI technologies into our services, building highly connected streaming data systems, and developing fault tolerant data services are just some of the interesting tasks coming up for the team.

Our custom development work with various private and public organizations means that our entire team has to be quite flexible, collaborative, and we enjoy tackling unknowns. Throughout the year, you could work on 2-4 different projects, all with different tech stacks and deliverables. If you like change and the challenge of getting to know new clients, environments, and tech, then please do consider joining us. Depending on your experience level and interests, you'll also have the opportunity to work on building and configuring cloud infrastructure and automated deployments.

Radical is also starting out on an exciting journey to create a platform for cities (SimpliCity) that uses data to enhance decision-making, service delivery, and improve people’s lives. We’re also launching CityAssistant.ai as the first module of the platform. As part of work on the platform, we will be exploring and implementing software that utilizes artificial intelligence, machine learning, and real-time data streams. You will have the opportunity to be involved in areas relevant to your skills and interests as they arise in our product roadmap.
