The Critical Care Program includes a 25 bed ICU that provides evidence based services within an inter-disciplinary team model. The unit cares for critically ill patients from the medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecologic, neurosciences and trauma programs. Specialized services including continuous renal replacement (CRRT) for acute renal failure, rhabdomyolisis and sepsis; hemodialysis for acute or chronic renal failure; therapeutic plasma exchange for hematological and autoimmune disorders; and the regional bariatric and thoracic programs.
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the Intensive Care Unit reports clinically to the Medical Director, RAH Critical Care and administratively to the Patient Care Manager, Critical Care, Royal Alexandra Hospital. The Nurse Practitioner role is to promote excellence in clinical practice, utilizing a comprehensive knowledge base and an excellent ability to apply it to the clinical setting. The primary responsibility is to provide comprehensive direct patient care to the Adult Critical Care population independently and in consultation with the Intensivist. The Nurse Practitioner is required to perform comprehensive assessments, diagnosis (including ordering and interpretation of tests), interventions (including prescribing of medications and procedures), management, referral and evaluation of patient/ client care. The incumbent is expected to provide leadership and participate in program development, quality improvement and evaluation, research and clinical teaching activities. The Nurse Practitioner consistently exercises a leadership role in utilizing best practices.

A Master’s Degree in Nursing with a focus on advanced clinical practice is required. Candidates must have current registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) in the NP Adult Stream or Family Stream. A minimum of five full-time years of related experience as a registered Nurse, as well as current CPR (BCLS-HCP) and ACLS are required.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Current experience as a NP in an acute care setting is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with experience as an NP in Critical Care.
