We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Engineering Manager to join our Skookumchuck Mill. The Engineering Manager will play a key role in the overall success of our organization by planning, managing, and monitoring engineering functions. You will be responsible for overseeing various engineering projects, processes, budgets, and timelines and making any necessary adjustments in order to ensure successful completion.


  • Supervises and manages, engineering department.
  • Provide technical recommendation and support to maintenance department.
  • Investigate problems, and lead in facilitating recommendations for improvements to ensure highest level of all quality throughout product offering and services provided.
  • Evaluate workloads within department to ensure appropriate facilitation of job task and work load in order to optimize departmental efficiency
  • Develop and coaches team, to develop expertise, knowledge and enhance skill set
  • As a member of the Mill Management Team, participates in the leadership of the overall business of the mill.
  • Provides support to the development and implementation strategic and operational plans for the mill.
  • Monitors and analyzes emerging engineering issues as they relate to the mill and leads the completion of engineering projects related projects/initiatives which are identified to be corporate priorities.
  • Provides direction and oversight to project engineering and engineering development activities; and, takes a leadership role in capital and maintenance programs to ensure they are completed on time and within budget.
  • Ensures the development and implementation of medium to long term engineering plans for the mill to maximize uptime and efficiency.
  • Provides leadership to the team and fosters an environment which motivates the team to fully use its capabilities in achieving desired business results.
  • Establishes and clearly defines responsibility for staff on the team and ensures the ongoing management and support of staff and effective employee performance.
  • Liaises as required with union representatives to settle grievances and deal with contracting out issues.
  • Develops departmental budgets, prioritizes spending, and advises senior management on cost over-runs and extraordinary equipment requisitions.
  • Ensures department cost statements are effectively utilized and analyzed at all levels of the department.
  • Accountable for effective usage of capital funds and providing leadership in the preparation of capital job requests and their completion within established specifications.
  • Ensures all contract labour is most efficiently utilized and accounted for and reduced to minimum numbers as jobs are completed.

  • Knowledge of pulp & paper industry in order to develop and guide team, increasing level of knowledge and ability throughout all direct reports

  • Understands proper delegations when needed to spread workload and make things happenQualifications:
  • Minimum B.S. Engineering required and 10 + years of experience in engineering and project management of capital projects (such as Chemical, Materials, Pulp and Paper, Bio products and Biosystems).
  • At least 5 years with supervisory experience.
  • Expertise in the industry including project management and operations management.
  • Proven leader with previous experience of managing others

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, entrepreneurial skills, and interpersonal skills necessary to operate in a team environment
  • Lean Management , Six Sigma and/or Operational Excellence training
