Position Summary:
Ainsworth is committed to meeting or exceeding all applicable Safety and Environmental regulations and developing and maintaining a World Class Safety culture to achieve an accident free work environment. This position oversees both the implementation of Company Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) management systems, Fleet Management and the approach for how the Company's management systems will be executed within the facilities. The incumbent provides leadership and administration to the overall HSE program by developing an annual plan, achieving consensus and buy-in from site leadership and driving the implementation of and monitoring progress against the plan and corresponding objectives.

The role will also be accountable for developing, implementing and monitoring fleet management, maintenance and disposition programs in order to keep Ainsworth vehicles in compliance with Ainsworth’s and Provincial and Federal standards and legislation requirements at the lowest, safe and sustainable, cost.


Health & safety

Responsible for managing, coordinating and overseeing implementation of all Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) programs and processes
Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, and Ainsworth policies and continuous improvement in key identified measures and objectives
Prepares and builds consensus annual plans for plant wide HSE initiatives
Plan/Budget/Control annual capital budget for HSE to ensure flawless execution of the HSE plan and adherence to all internal and external compliance standards
Drives next-level thinking and continuous improvement in the HSE function and company programs/initiatives
Provides HSE expertise for the plant for all new projects and change management activities
Chair of Joint Health and Safety Committee
Develops performance standards and methods of accomplishing those standards to measures facilities against. Develops, designs, and has responsibility for the implementation and follow-through of the local processes. Follows up on non-conformances and develops the systems to resolve them based on root cause analysis
Understands relevant technical requirements in HSE and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, and company policies
Ensures appropriate risk assessments are conducted and follow-ups implemented to minimize or eliminate accidents, asset losses, security breaches and environmental issues that might cause harm to one of the company’s employees, contractors, visitors, assets or reputation
Ensures that appropriate talent is in place through training, mentoring, and succession planning and supports the development and learning capabilities of plant HSE specialists
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of trends and current practices in Health and Safety to dissect data and reconfigure/re-plan approach to course correct to achieve zero safety incidents
Review performance and key metrics in HSE and facilitates the implementation of corrective and preventative actions where required
Ensures the facility standards follow Company, governmental and community regulations
Ensures training and coaching are taking place to drive a safety-perfect culture and to ensure safety and environmental standards and awareness are well understood throughout the plant organization

Fleet Management

Establish standard processes to control the Ainsworth vehicle fleet: Inventory, acquisition, replacement, retirement, maintenance, usage, legislation compliance and others.
Act as a content expert and consultant to create policies, strategic and operational plans and direction with respect to continuous improvement initiatives regarding fleet safety, maintenance, operations and compliance.
Lead fleet-related implementation projects: decal installation, rebranding, GPS installation, etc.
Manage fleet card program for the company. Be the first point of contact for internal customers to help resolve any daily issues.
Develop and track KPIs for fleet operations, maintenance, and health and safety. Prepare, submit and present regular internal reports.
Track and control vehicle maintenance and operational costs. Propose and/or review agreements with 3rd party providers.
Specify fleet typical vehicles and vehicle requirements to meet safety and operational needs (including accessorial for PDAs, telematics, transponders, paperwork, and other needs).
Analyze and identify issues impacting operational and safety performance and establish initiatives for continuous improvement to ensure Ainsworth's seamless operations and drivers’ harmony.
Enhance and audit training programs. Train (and/or assist on training of) drivers and managers in legislation compliance, on-boarding, customer interaction, daily routines (loading, searching, tracking, picking up, delivering and unloading), use and maintenance of vehicles, health and safety, use of technology in a vehicle (telematics, handheld applications, communication devices, and others).
Ensure 100% compliance with Federal, Provincial and local government legislations, including Highway Traffic and Safety Act, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations.
Ensure compliance with vehicle (fleet) insurance, registration, license renewal, CVOR (or equivalent), leases, and other. Maintain individual vehicle files with the assistance of local management.
Participate in incident/accidents review committees. Track and follow‐up on recommendations and corrective action in this matter. Ensure incident corrective actions are followed up on and completed. Elaborate ad‐hoc drivers and fleet performance and financial analyses. Provide inputs to reduce mileage, hours of services and fuel emissions (routing and fleet optimization).
Inform the management team of any new or conflicting legislative matters that could impact operations, costs, and/or health and safety.
Develop and implement a program to ensure Driver’s compliance with legislation (including abstract checks) and Ainsworth policies. Maintain individual drivers’ files with the assistance of local management. Review and follow up on any infractions


University degree in Business, Science or Engineering is required
10+ years of progressive experience in Strategic health & safety and fleet management in a leadership capacity.
Post-secondary education – Diploma or Degree in a program relating to safety, CRSP or NCSO designation is required
Knowledge about Highway Traffic and Safety Act, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations and how it affects a national logistics network
Must have knowledge of vehicle fleet and drivers’ technologies and trends
A high degree of personal ethics, integrity and responsibility with an ability to deal with sensitive issues
Understand issues that drive the business and how to effectively support the business to enhance growth
Proven ability to excel at strategic thinking and planning as well as tactical implementation
Industry experience and a demonstrated track record in continuous improvement within an integrated Health & Safety function, including superior technical knowledge fleet, drivers and H&S in transportation
