CERTIFIED EDUCATION ASSISTANT - BASIC SIGNING

The Vernon School District is centered in the City of Vernon, BC and is located at the north end of the beautiful Okanagan Valley near both Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka Lake. Our district combines all the amenities available in larger centers with a small town feel.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We currently have a Certified Education Assistant - Basic Signing vacancy. This is a District based, Regular, Permanent position - at an hourly rate of pay of $23.66. The successful incumbent will be assigned to a specific student, at a specific school - but this assignment location could change year to year.

Under the supervision of the Teacher/Administrator our CEA’s tutor students, modify and prepare specialized teaching materials, compile and update student records, and monitor student behavior.

Supervisory duties may also include noon hour and bus supervision as required.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Education Assistant - Basic Signing must be flexible in adapting signing communication to match the student’s signing communication modes and level of comprehension and they must assist teachers to help the student develop self-advocacy to foster independence.

Student assistance including assisting teacher by tutoring individual students or small groups, facilitate communication and if required prepare and modify specialized teaching materials.

Maintain student records including assisting in development of strategies to achieve academic, behavioral and social goals and monitor and record student progress.

Student supervision including monitoring student behavior to ensure safety of the student and preventing students from hurting others and assist in minor first aid and complete required forms.

Communicate with students, staff and others and provide information of a detailed or specialized nature. Encourage, secure cooperation and influence the students to achieve social, academic and behavioral goals.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Six (6) months relevant training which includes recent Okanagan College Certified Education Assistant (CEA) Certificate (or the equivalent) including practicum experience or training in dealing with resistant students and conflict resolution.
  • Background in signed communication and American Sign Language (ASL). Course work must be proficient at a Level 3 ASLPI - (ASL Proficiency Interview) or equivalent.
  • Ability and willingness to work with technological devices for students who are deaf and hard of hearing, ie: FM systems, cochlear implant processors, hearing aids and sound field systems and they must be willing to assist students and teachers with the use of these devices.
  • Current - CPI Certification, Non Violent Crisis Intervention and First-Aid are preferred (or candidate must be willing to obtain or renew).
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience working as a Certified Educational Assistant.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge and sensitivity in the Deaf Culture and understanding of the specific learning needs of students with hearing loss.
  • Proven ability to develop rapport with students and work in a team setting.
  • Proven ability to learn and successfully use new technology and to possess literacy, numeracy and English skills.
  • Personal attributes required include strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and good communication skills.
