The Construction Estimator will be a critical member of the team and overall process. Through extensive experience in residential construction, this person will be in charge of taking a variety of projects through the stages of conception/design, tendering/estimating, permits, client selections through to construction commencement. The success of our diverse projects will be contingent on this person’s ability of high-level customer service, communication skills, attention to detail, ability to function in a high pace environment and collaboration among our growing team.

Key Functions and Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed cost analysis based on costs of materials, labour and equipment for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, detailed drawings and specifications
  • Creating very detailed construction specifications and contract documents
  • Completing and issuing change order documents to accounting department and clients
  • Tracking, reviewing and signing off on monthly invoices and comparing against initial estimates
  • Communication with clients with regards to selections and changes in design and/or scopes of work
  • Formulation of building permit package and other third-party agency applications
  • Identify and plan project schedules, critical activities and develop recommendations to expedite the project
  • Acquire and review multiple quotes from vendors and suppliers for detail and accuracy
  • Develop post-project analysis report and learning points
  • Performs quality take-off from construction drawings where applicable
  • Accountable for accuracy and completion of tender submissions
  • Maintain exceptional communication with all stakeholders including clients, sub-contractors and construction personnel
  • Identify risks and recommend corrected actions
  • Responsible for sourcing and creating new sub-trade and supplier relationships as directed
  • Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors
  • Assists in maintenance of estimating department policies, procedures, processes and standards
  • Communicate with clients for scheduling and decisions
  • Meet and strive to exceed quality standards and service to all clients
  • Work with and advise schedules and goals with labour and sub-trades
  • Identify and respond to issues and obstacles that may impede progress
  • Determine methods of construction, material and equipment requirements
  • Lead and inspire team including mentoring and development of new employees
  • Support and openly contribute to organizational goals/projects and overall improvement
  • Protects any and all sensitive and confidential materials regarding the company and operations

Additional considerations/skills:

  • Minimum three years experience in related position
  • Five years experience in site supervisory or equivalent position is preferred
  • Post secondary education in related field or skilled trade is preferred
  • Exceptional communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong customer service skills with a “client first” based attitude
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn

  • Proven use of Microsoft Office programs (including but not limited to Excel, Word and Outlook) and use of technology
  • Core understanding of the Ontario Building Code
  • Ability to read and interpret construction and various detailed drawings
  • Excellence in problem solving and root cause analysis
  • Exceptional knowledge of various construction methods and building and renovation requirements
  • Ability to work in a fast pace environment with multiple deadlines and interruptions
  • Holding various suppliers and subtrades accountable to deadlines and pricing
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Taking initiative in day to day operations and process improvement
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule multiple tasks to be completed
  • Willingness to perform duties outside of normal working hours as required
