The Alberta Securities Commission is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.
The Joint Serious Offences Team (JSOT) Alberta is an enforcement partnership between the ASC, and the RCMP Financial Integrity program. JSOT combines the ASC’s expertise in capital markets and with law enforcement policing skills to investigate and prosecute serious violations of the law using provisions of the Securities Act (Alberta) and Criminal Code.
Reporting to the Manager, JSOT, this position is responsible for conducting complex investigations, individually and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, into breaches of Alberta securities law and/or criminal law.

The ideal candidate will possess:
- Formulating strategy for investigations with an understanding of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and case law as they relate to quasi-criminal and criminal investigations (emphasis on R. v. Jarvis).
- Preparing for and conducting voluntary structured witness and respondent/suspect interviews complete with required Charter caution.
- Composing Affidavits or Information To Obtain (ITO) search warrants and/or other judicial authorizations to obtain evidence.
- Executing search warrants and production orders and controlling and managing evidence.
- Managing complex investigations from initial complaint to conclusion of investigation and constructing disclosure packages to the criminal standard.
- Developing investigation reports, recommending courses of action, and testifying during court proceedings.
- Conducting effective presentations to various groups, both large and small.
- Travelling as required, generally within Alberta, to conduct interviews and obtain evidence.
- A post-secondary education in Law, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Business, Finance or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years’ investigative experience in a regulatory or law enforcement environment.
- A minimum of three to five years experience leading quasi-criminal and/or criminal investigations, and participating in multi-agency partnerships.
- Exceptional writing skills
- Experience in giving evidence in court proceedings.
- A proven ability to manage responsibilities relating to quasi-criminal and/or criminal search warrants and conducting voluntary Charter caution interviews and examinations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively influence and manage diverse views.
- Superior interviewing skills, as well as excellent analytical, verbal and written communication.
- The ability to be agile, creative and solve problems in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
- In addition, the ideal candidate will have completed or have interest in completing Major Case Management training and the Canadian Securities Course.
