InnoTech Alberta offers a range of science, engineering and technological research talent and testing capabilities, and the facilities that can help accelerate technology development serving both the private and public sector.

We are seeking one Junior Environmental Technologist for our Ecosystem Management team in Vegreville to provide support in the delivery of a large project using aquatic mesocosms (15,000 L physical models of aquatic systems) to examine potential environmental impacts of industrial activity). This is a six month position, with an estimated start date of April 27, 2020. The assignment will be under the direction of project researchers and existing technologists.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: Prepare/label samples Perform data entry Repeated sampling of physical, chemical, and ecological parameters for 30 aquatic mesocosms Collect and handle a range of sample types, including water, zooplankton, phytoplankton, macroinvertebrates, and aquatic plants Use and maintain electronic equipment to collect water chemistry data Identifying improvements to the routine monitoring process Assist in the preparation of equipment (e.g., pumps and hoses) for maintenance and decommissioning work Assist with operations of the mesocosm facility, including operating pumps to distribute water to appropriate tanks, removing test materials from tanks, maintaining infrastructure in each tank (e.g., shelves to hold plants), and ongoing tasks Perform other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.

Qualifications and skills we are looking for A BSc or technical degree in a related science or technology field, preferably environmental science, forestry, or agriculture. Other specializations and relevant diplomas in applicable fields may be considered First-hand experience with mechanical and/or sampling equipment (e.g., farming or forestry experience); experience in the operation of equipment such as water pumps is desirable An understanding of methods/practices of basic environmental or biological sampling Experience in data collection and management with attention to detail Safe and efficient work practices and the ability to multi-task Experience working in all kinds of weather Ability to endure long days and challenging conditions while collecting high-quality data Ability to follow directions, work as part of a team or alone, show initiative, positive attitude and strong work ethic, would be very beneficial Excellent writing and verbal communication skills are desirable Must be physically capable of working in the field for much of each week; the ability to lift at least 50 lbs. repeatedly is an asset. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including spreadsheets, is preferred This position is located at InnoTech Alberta’s Vegreville site, so candidates must be able to commute to Vegreville; no compensation is provided for routine travel to and from this location Minimum class 5 license
