Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator and will work with the Principal Investigator in the area of diabetes and cholesterol.

The Research Associate will play an important role in project management including scientific writing, study design, data management, programming, and statistical analyses. This includes performing high-level statistical analyses on large databases including developing and determining appropriate statistical techniques for research questions (including logistic regression modelling, survival analysis, and analysis of longitudinal data), manipulating data and carrying out the chosen analyses, conducting literature reviews, scientific writing and submitting ethics and manuscripts, mentoring other staff members, and actively engaging in research activities and knowledge translation within the University, the province and nationally.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Critically read and intelligently interpret the primary literature is necessary for success in this position
Develop content, including positioning, for strategic grant proposals and documentation related to key research initiatives
Interact and collaborate with other researchers in the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and the O'Brien Institute for Public Health to leverage local expertise
Edit and review research initiative documentation for consistency of messaging Prioritize work flow in response to changing workloads and shifting priorities
Develop and implement different strategies and degrees of research, writing, editing and proofreading appropriate to the assigned tasks and projects
Provide scientific/technical writing and editing of designated grant applications, journal manuscripts, progress reports, ethics submissions, and other miscellaneous projects to support the needs of researchers.
Performs and interprets basic (Chi-square, t-tests, Mann Whitney tests, etc.) and advanced analyses (logistic regression, competing risks/multi-state modeling, and multi-level modeling, etc)
Merge and analyze large datasets
Prepare and submit study documents for ethics submissions and approval
Maintain accurate records of all study material including protocols, questionnaires, renewals, modifications, etc
Establishes and maintains effective and productive relationship with staff, peers and immediate supervisor
Train and provide directions to junior research assistants and students
Accurate and timely analysis of results in accordance with project objectives and deliverables
Clear and accurate database related documentation outlining steps performed in the analysis
Ability to demonstrate assigned and scheduled tasks are done on own initiative and that results are beneficial to the success of the research project

Qualifications / Requirements:
MSc (thesis) or PhD in Epidemiology, Health Services Research, Population Health or Biostatistics
Minimum of 2-3 years relevant experience
Demonstrated competence and experience in project development and management is highly desirable
Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, and production management; and have proven experience manuscript and grant submissions
Experience in scientific writing in an asset Excellent understanding of research methods Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Work courteously and professionally under stressful conditions and tight deadlines, using tact and diplomacy while respecting appropriate confidentialities
Creative thinker and fast learner who is proficient with information and communication technologies and who wants to continuously improve their knowledge base and skill sets
Ability to work in an environment of continuous change and growth Demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks
Require flexibility and the ability to handle change with ease Strong interpersonal initiative and teamwork
Experience with Statistical software (STATA, SAS, or R)
Keen analytic ability, be able to work well with diverse individuals and teams Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent organization skills, including the ability to work independently, to multi-task, and to coordinate the work of others
