Operations Manager - Wabush
Under the direction of the GM, Mining Operations, the Operations Manager is responsible and accountable for leading and managing the Wabush Branch operations to achieve SMS Equipment Inc’s mission and to implement and support the policies, goals, and objectives established by the SMS Equipment Inc. Responsible for the management, development and direction of the branch’s daily business operations; ensuring branch activities support the safe, efficient and continuous functions of sales, maintenance, repair and fabrication of mining equipment and large components.
Primarily responsible for the safety, leadership and management of the day-to-day activities of the Wabush operations and aligning with the objectives and mandates of the GM, Mining Operations and SMS Management.
Maintains and evolves a strong safety culture through sound and effective safety leadership practices.
Plans, organizes, and directs all branch operational activities, including parts, service, and maintenance activities within the site ensuring that assets are efficiently employed. (e.g. WIP, A/R, warranty claims, product support, inventory control, workforce management.)
Establishes a high level of performance with respect to cost management.
Develops and leads programs/initiatives to enhance the site capabilities to provide around the service and support of a dynamic customer, and other supporting contractors, to drive best practices and creative solutions for an ever evolving and challenging environment.
Establishes a high level of customer satisfaction through the effective communication of performance standards required to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of product and related services.
Ensures implementation of corporate initiatives, policies and procedures, and business processes by ensuring proper communication, coaching, education and training.
Drives production and maximizes the sites performance as it relates to safety, environmental compliance, best practices, profitability, quality, cost reduction, workflow, productivity, and human resources, as related to the Wabush Branch.
Develops annual business plans, objectives, and related budgets
Drives Branch operating results compares with established objectives and takes the appropriate measure to enhance outcome and performance.
Monitors and ensures compliance with all contracts, contractors, and supplier agreements.
Monitors warranty policy and administration to ensure maximum warranty cost recovery and minimize risk exposure and cost.
Directs and coordinates the interpretation, implementation and application of programs, policies and procedures, and regulatory requirements relating to the relevant sites including, but not limited to:
Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment
Labour and Employee Relations
Compensation and Benefits
Autonomous Haulage System (AHS)
Primary SMS representative for the branch for Customer Relationship Management.
Works directly with the customer Management team and the OEM to develop key initiatives to reduce the TCO of the production fleets, while maximizing the efficiency of SMS resources.
In collaboration with the OEM and the customer, the incumbent drives the adoption and integration of new technologies, processes, and programs.
Works closely with the OEM and the customer to develop strategic training and deployment programs of SMS resources, required to support the technologies, while constantly looking for efficiency gains and opportunities to enhance SMS onsite support
Actively seeks out best practices from other mine sites around the world, establishing relationships to share best practices.
Integrates the key stakeholders of the SMS team with the teams of the OEM and customer, ensuring maximum communication and involvement
Relates to activities that ensure effective delivery of service to all levels of internal and external customers.
Ensures provision of service (technical and non-technical) to customers, based on agreed programs and in compliance with Company policies and goals, ensuring minimization of costs and maximization of Company image.
Promotes a positive labour/ employee relations climate and teamwork at all levels of the Branch organization.
Practices sound leadership and human relations principles to promote teamwork at all times.
Conducts and participates in activities that contribute to an effective working relationship with both hourly and staff employees.
Ensures all department activities are conducted in full compliance with safety, health and environmental standards, company rules and processes (policies, CP’s, SWP’s, JHA’s) and other applicable legislation
Requires evidence from direct reports that OHSE processes function well. Performs random audits to check processes.
Ensures corrective actions are implemented and maintained.
Supports the Branch JOSH Committee.
Works with direct reports to resolve unresolved issues and brings any remaining unresolved issues to the next level of management.
Brings awareness to safety by participating fully in all Branch and Company safety programs.
Performs other duties and projects as required by General Manager, Mining Operations and senior management.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Under graduate degree in a related technical field is preferred
A minimum of 8 – 10 years experience within the mining/ industrial industry with a strong operations orientation is required
