Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the Safety and Training Specialist is responsible for providing leadership, coordination, assessments, and training for all occupational health, safety and loss prevention programs to ensure the safety and wellbeing of employees and other personnel on-site; and the protection of the physical plants and company property. The incumbent provides expertise and guidance to all levels of management to promote a culture that ensures the highest standards of safety, occupational health and training.
Accountabilities and key activities:
Promote a safety culture that encourages individual responsibility and personal commitment.
Keep abreast of internal and external changes that affect the divisional safety and health strategy and incorporate the required changes in the divisional programs. Ensure compliance with Work Safe BC regulations, federal and provincial regulations, local by-laws and corporate guidelines.
Represent the company in all matters involving the Work Safe BC and with government enforcement and industry agencies and associations to ensure that company interests are protected. Represent the company as required on various committees and special task force groups in the occupational health and safety and training arena.
Facilitate meetings at various levels and provide support to area teams and departmental crews to address occupational health and safety issues and to promote a high level of safety awareness among all employees. Maintain resource materials for reference by all employees.
Coordinate formal incident investigations as required and establish appropriate preventive measures. Review and analyze incident statistics to identify trends and to formulate corrective action.
Coordinate the development and implementation of programs, policies, and materials for regulatory, line-of-progression and on-the-job training. Ensure each department has a comprehensive forecast of training needs and review and provide processes to monitor ongoing training progress.
Five years of safety, hygiene and training experience, preferably in an industrial setting.
OHS Certificate or Diploma, and ability to work towards CRSP designation.
Demonstrated ability to make quick decisions under pressure.
Education or experience in adult education, or previous training experience would be an asset.
Strong technical writing skills.
