General Description: Hatfield Consultants is pleased to offer this exciting career-growth opportunity for a qualified Environmental Technician to assist with environmental management, field studies, design input, permitting and monitoring associated with infrastructure projects, primarily in BC. The ideal candidate will have a broad ecology background, revel working in a fast paced, dynamic, consulting environment and be equally adept in the field and office. Project assignments will cross several industry sectors (e.g., roads/ bridges/ highways, marine and coastal development, pipelines, renewable energy, mining, etc.) and include terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments throughout Western Canada. This position will have excellent mentorship from experienced environmental professionals.
The position will be based out of Hatfield’s North Vancouver or New Westminster office and may require travel throughout the province.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct required field activities including construction monitoring, fish, aquatic, wildlife and vegetation studies and baseline surveys in support of project design, permitting and implementation.
Assist with managing all aspects of project planning and implementation, including health and safety, resourcing, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, quality management, and day-to-day client liaison.
Provide technical assistance for acquiring environmental permits, licenses, and approvals from regulatory agencies.
Provide technical assistance in the preparation of a range of environmental compliance documents required for project approval and implementation, such as EMPs, EPPs, and environmental work plans.
Work with project development teams – including proponents, regulators, design engineers, and construction personnel – to address environmental management and protection measures during project planning, design and implementation.
Excellent problem-solving skills to ensure project delivery and compliance through creative solutions.
Capable of working with multi-disciplinary project teams to obtain permits, licenses, and approvals from local, provincial, and federal authorities.
Understanding of pertinent environmental legislation, regulations, and guidance documents.
Excellent communication (verbal and technical writing) skills and time management.
Comfortable issuing stop-work orders and independently implementing controls necessary to protect the environment during non-compliance events.
Motivated, adaptable team player willing to independently take ownership of specific tasks.
Education and Experience:
Technical diploma, B.Sc., or equivalent with appropriate qualifications for work in BC and at least two years of relevant experience.
Experience interpreting and working with federal and provincial environmental regulatory and permitting requirements associated with infrastructure development projects.
Experience working successfully in large, multi-disciplinary engineering design teams and heavy civil construction teams.
Experience working with a range of environmental disciplines (e.g., air quality, noise, surface and groundwater quality, soils, erosion and sediment control, vegetation, fish and fish habitat, contaminated sites, archaeology, Indigenous communities, etc.) is an asset.
Relevant professional certification (e.g., BIT, Trainee RBTech, AAg, EPt, etc.) or ability to obtain is an asset.
Experience operating in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork.
Ability/interest to work in the field.
