Under the supervision of the Health Manager, the youth worker is responsible for creating and facilitating successful programs that will improve the life skills and leadership abilities of the youth of Gitsegukla.

General duties include:

Program Leadership

  • Effectively leads a program that offers a minimum of 8 to 10 hours of weekly programming for children and youth in Gitsegukla
  • Develops and implements after school, professional development days
  • Creates, organizes, and facilitates youth and intergenerational sports and recreational activities
  • Creates, organizes, and facilitates workshops focusing on aspects of healthy living, culture, life skills, self-esteem, and alcohol and drugs
  • Plans and performs all details and logistics needed to deliver trainings, workshops and sessions for a minimum of 10 - 20 youth
  • Manages groups of youth, supervises youth safety, and monitors youth interactions
  • Provides one to one support to youth as needed
  • Supports youth as they plan, lead and assess community based event; serves as a mentor and support resource for youth initiatives in the community
  • Assists in the development and implementation of training opportunities for youth
  • Promotes youth participation in conferences and training
  • Maintains professional boundaries and professional working relationships at all times
  • Monitors and evaluate programs and activities

Building Relationships

  • Liaises with outside agencies and the community on programs relating to Gitsegukla youth
  • Identifies other potential community partners that could assist in making sure youth are aware of training opportunities provided

Finance and Administration

  • Completes all reporting requirements in a timely manner
  • Creates detailed monthly calendars and circulates to the community
  • Participates in all staff meetings
  • Manages program budget and reports monthly expenses to Health Manager
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position and as assigned by the Health Manager

  • Highly motivated and committed to program success
  • Ability to be resourceful and proactive in dealing with issues that may arise
  • Knowledge of computers and relevant software application, including Microsoft Office
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of effective office procedures
  • Knowledge of records management techniques
  • Knowledge of youth services and organizations in the region
  • Proven ability to establish trusting relationships with excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Resourceful and innovative with good problem-solving skills
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Independent worker with ability to work with and contribute to a strong team environment
  • Ability to adhere to strong confidentiality policies and procedures
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required
  • Ability to multi-task and take directions from multiple sources

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Post-secondary diploma/degree in a related field of study, preferred
  • Preference will be given for persons holding cultural teachings and knowledge
  • 1 – 2 years experience facilitating workshops for groups of 10 or more
  • 2 – 3 years experience in working with youth and children in recreation, arts and culture programming
  • Experience in coordinating large events for 50+ people
  • Certification in First Aid & CPR

  • Ability to successfully and periodically undergo an appropriate criminal records review and police record check is required
