We are currently seeking a caring, compassionate and non-judgemental Casual Health Care Aide

Position Description:

Our Caregivers provide support based on the individual needs of each client. All clients are living with HIV and may have one or more other co-morbidities including mental illness, brain injury, diabetes, cancers, histories of homelessness and poverty. The primary responsibility is to motivate and support the clients we serve to develop life and community skills and create a comfortable home-like environment. This may include assisting with some or all of the following:

Psychosocial Support

  • Motivate clients to engage in their health and wellness
  • Engage clients in activities – crafts, games, etc.
  • Assess emotional well-being of each resident
  • Actively listen to issues and concerns in a confidential and non-judgemental manner
  • Assist with problem resolution on an individual or group basis
  • Create a comfortable, home-like environment

Medical Support

  • Administer medications in a safe and timely manner
  • Contact appropriate medical supports when necessary

Physical Support(palliative care home only)

  • Assist with hygiene including bathing, oral hygiene, skin care, hair, etc.
  • Assist with preparing and serving food
  • Perform light housekeeping duties – sweeping floors, washing floors, cleaning kitchen, making beds, etc.
  • Lift and move from one position to another
  • Assist with body exercise (providing a simple range of motion exercise)

Spiritual Support

  • Respect each individual’s beliefs and values
  • Listen in a non-judgmental manner
  • Provide comfort and reassurance

Other responsibilities include:

  • Communicate with doctors, nurses, other care attendants and volunteers
  • Record daily activities into an online database (training provided)

Key Accountabilities:

  • Supervision provided by the Senior Caregiver
  • Work in a team environment with other SHARP employees, contractors and volunteers

Working Conditions:

  • House environment – up to 10 clients
  • Lift and reposition clients (palliative care home only)
  • Shift work including weekends
  • Supportive environment
  • Tuberculosis testing, Hepatitis B immunization and annual influenza vaccinations will be expected
  • Lunch breaks on site
  • 12 hour shifts


  • Excellent communications skills – listening, computer-based documenting, reading and oral (Must be fluent in English)
  • Dependable, caring and committed
  • Sound judgement and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • High level of initiative and self-motivation
  • Empathetic, compassionate and able to build respect and trust with residents
  • Strong safety focus; good understanding of universal safety procedures
  • High level of confidentiality and discretion
  • Honest and non-judgmental


  • Experience in providing compassionate care and support
  • Health Care Aide Certificate/Diploma(Asset)
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR and WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) certification (required)
  • Computer skills – accessing the internet, email and use of Microsoft Office (Word)
  • Knowledge of HIV (asset)
  • Food Safety Certification (asset)
