The Assistant Head Nurse is responsible and accountable for staff development activities that support the team of nursing and clerical staff across all program areas and business units of acquire knowledge, apply required skills, and meet performance standards. Reporting to Manager of Travelers’ Health Services Calgary Zone, this position has a leadership role in the design, planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of all staff education and professional development programs and initiatives. Working independently , the incumbent uses best practices, has in-depth experience in Travel Health and a clear understanding of staff needs in order to develop evidence-based practice that contributes to continuous improvement in Travel Health service. This position acts as a resource to the provincial THS program and specifically Calgary zone by providing guidance, insight and direction for staff development priorities. The incumbent collaborates with his/her counterpart in Calgary/Edmonton and other AHS sites to ensure consistency and alignment of orientation and staff education programs, identify educational gaps or opportunities and develop education program implementation and evaluation strategies.
As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Minimum 3 years current experience in Travel Medicine. Minimum 3 years current experience in Public Health experience involving immunization services. Sound knowledge of Travel Health Services and Communicable Disease Control Programs or equivalent combination of skills and experience.
Adult teaching and staff development experience preferred Demonstrated teaching competency with professional and support staff. Demonstrated expertise in utilizing existing clinical system (Meditech). Operational procedures, processes and education materials development experience preferred. Demonstrated excellent knowledge of provincially funded and travel immunization programs.
