The Allied Health Department works collaboratively with all the clinical teams spread across the South Health Campus. As a member of an interdisciplinary team and under the general supervision from the Allied Health Assistant Manager, the Recreation Therapist ensures the level of Recreation Therapy practice is evidence based and meets Recreation Therapy standards of practice. Recreation Therapy works with an in-patient population at South Health Campus – primarily patients who are transitioning to an alternate level of care and have a demonstrated need for goal directed therapeutic recreation. The Recreation Therapist will be required to triage referrals for Recreation Therapy, complete appropriate assessments and develop individualized intervention plans that may include 1-1 sessions or group activities. The Recreation Therapist will be responsible for organizing, coordinating, developing and evaluating group programming for patients with the support of volunteer staff and therapy assistants/aides. This position is physically demanding and requires repetitive lifting and transferring of patients and or equipment. The caseload for all positions within the Allied Health department may be subject to change based on operational considerations. Please note this position may involve occasional evening shifts.
As a Recreation Therapist I, you will be working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, providing comprehensive services for patients (clients, residents) within your assigned program or service area. You will ensure the level of therapeutic recreation practice is evidence based, patient-and family-centred, and in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice. You will complete assessment, treatment, education and management and provide clinical support and consultation. You will collaborate and communicate with the health care team and participate in patient rounds, family conferences and meetings as related to the client and family.

Completion of bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Studies. Active or eligible registration for Professional Membership with Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).
Additional Required Qualifications:
At least one years’ experience within the past two years working in an adult in-patient medical unit in an acute care environment with a primarily geriatric population including those with a diagnosis of advanced dementia. Heart & Stroke Foundation (BLS - Health Care Provider Level C) certification required.
At least 2 years’ experience within the past five years working in an adult in-patient medical unit in an acute care environment with a primarily geriatric population including those with and diagnosis of advanced dementia.
