The Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation provides compassionate HIV care for people living with significant health and social issues including mental illness, trauma, addictions, unstable housing and poverty.

Through its day health, 24-hour care residence and enhanced supportive housing programs, the Dr. Peter Centre provides healthy meals, counselling, therapies, nursing, and a safe place for peer socialization and support. This integrated model of care successfully engages individuals in their health care, improving adherence to HIV treatment and overall health.

We are currently looking for Full Time, Part Time, and Casual RNs to join our Day Health Team.

Position Description and Duties

Reporting to the Day Health Program Manager, the role of the Nurse in the Day Health Program is the provision of primary, secondary and tertiary preventative care with the overall goal of improving the person’s health. The Nurse works within the multidisciplinary team using an interdisciplinary approach to care. Clients may include individuals, families, groups, organizations or target populations.

This position requires the use of a significant body of nursing knowledge and skill to assess clients and establish priorities and action plans with various types of clients. Health treatment is provided through planning, implementing and evaluating care; teaching and counseling participants; identifying and documenting client condition and needs using health related data from a variety of sources.

Duties include:

  • Providing education for the promotion of health by engaging and providing holistic assessment that includes the determinants of health from a harm reduction view point;
  • Providing direct nursing care such as wound care, supervised injection, administration of medications (as prescribed and nurse initiated), OAT & iOAT, immunizations, continual assessment, liaising with other health care workers;
  • Providing preventive care including ensuring maintenance of health by ensuring adherence to ARV’s and other medications and other harm reduction initiatives. This would include regular assessments of physical and mental well being including monitoring diabetes and other risk factors and liaising with other health care providers.
  • Providing health teaching and promotion for participants;
  • Performing health assessments for Day Health participants;
  • Participating in the development and maintenance of infection control standards throughout the Dr. Peter Centre;
  • Participating in the development of policies, procedures and protocols relevant to the nursing role in the Day Health Program;
  • Participating in educational initiatives designed to build awareness of the therapeutic model of the Dr. Peter Centre Day Health Program;
  • Participating in research on HIV/AIDS treatment and other health issues affecting participants;
  • Delivering comprehensive nursing orientation to new Day Health staff;
  • Maintain clinical practices, ensuring that nursing standards consistent with BCCNP guidelines are followed;
  • Supervising nursing students as required;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills

  • Experience in acute and community care nursing
  • Knowledge and practice with HIV/AIDS, STD, addiction and mental health issues and experience working with marginalized populations
  • Excellent communication and assessment skills

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelors of Science in Nursing
  • Eligible for registration with the BCCNP.
