Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to coordinate and conduct research activities associated with the Canadian Research Initiative in Substance Misuse (CRISM), which include a number of studies at the intersection of substance use, healthcare services and policies, and community engagement. The Research Coordinator will conduct qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, assist in the management of projects including managing and tracking expenses, coordinate research dissemination activities, and conduct literature reviews under the supervision of the Program Manager and the Principal Investigator (PI; Dr. Evan Wood). The incumbent will also assist Dr. Wood and his team with the preparation of research grant and ethics applications, community partner engagement, and undertake other general research duties as required. Some occasional travel may be required for research purposes.

The Canadian Research Initiative on Substance Misuse (CRISM) is a national research network funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. CRISM research focuses on interventions for substance use disorders, with a mission to translate the best scientific evidence into clinical practice and policy change, at the local, regional, and national levels. The CRISM network operates through four regional Nodes, representing British Columbia, the Prairie Provinces, Ontario, and Quebec/Atlantic. The British Columbia CRISM Node is housed at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) and is comprised of a network of research scientists, service providers, policy makers, community leaders, and people with lived experience of substance use disorder.

The British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) is the provincial resource for evidence-based information and treatment guidance in the field of addiction and is affiliated with UBC and Providence Health Care. The BCCSU plays an advocacy role for positive and public policy change, reducing stigma, and supporting patients and their families. The BCCSU is committed to conducting and translating leading-edge research into improved addiction care across BC.

Organizational Status

The Research Coordinator will report to the Program Manager, and will work closely with
other research staff and Principal Investigators on a regular basis. This position is located at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use.

Work Performed

  • Provide direct research support to the CRISM PI and Program Manager. Coordinates and facilitates research activities, including the development, preparation, and implementation of studies.
  • Assists the Program Manager with various administrative tasks associated with the day-to-day operations of research studies.
  • Coordinates and facilitates meetings and events among community, staff, research teams, and support staff via teleconference and/or in-person. Facilitates both local and out-of-province community members to participate in events and research conferences.
  • Assists with research participant recruitment, conducts qualitative and quantitative research through surveys and focus groups, collects data for ongoing projects.
  • Prepares data files evaluating the quality of the data, overseeing data entry procedures, and identifying ways to validate data and enhancing quality control of data.
  • Supports, develops, and evaluates strategies that encourage community participation in research activities.
  • Supports, develops, and evaluates strategies for meaningful knowledge translation and implementation of research findings.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with key stakeholders, including people who use drugs, researchers, policymakers, and service providers.
  • Preparing, composing, editing and proofing of academic outputs, including presentations, progress reports, and manuscripts.
  • Develops communication materials, including websites, social media, and newsletters.
  • In consultation with the Program Manager and PI, leads and conducts literature reviews and drafts summaries of the findings.
  • Oversees research grant expenditures (determining eligible expenses against budget allocations), including management of invoices and payments and maintenance of internal records. Under supervision of the PI, assist with updating project budget and forecasts.
  • Prepares applications for academic research ethics boards, liaising with institutions across BC regarding ethics requirements, as needed.
  • Assists with the preparation of research grant applications, including drafting proposals, and summaries, as well as facilitating co-investigator contributions.
  • Conduct other general research duties as required.

The Research Coordinator will receive primary direction from the Program Manager.

The Research Coordinator may assign and check the work of research assistants.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position exercises professional judgment and initiative in the conduct of various research projects and is accountable for the efficient management of projects. Errors made could influence the ability of researchers to interpret data correctly, delay the timely completion of work, and thus compromise the results of research projects. This would impact the credibility of the PI and other research team investigators. Misjudgment or mistreatment of community partners could result in adverse relationships or compromise the progress of research studies.

Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Master's degree in Social Sciences, Health, or related field preferred. Minimum of two years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Clear understanding of the academic research process acquired through practical and/or academic experience required. Knowledge of substance use, related socioeconomic issues, and healthcare delivery systems is an asset. Knowledge of community health issues and experience with qualitative methodology. Experience in design and conduct of literature reviews. Experience in working with multidisciplinary, multi-site research teams and collaborative community-based projects an asset. Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience in, writing and coordinating research grant proposals. Experience with preparing and submitting applications for academic research to ethics boards preferred. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload, handle multiple assignments effectively and meet deadlines. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability and experience in preparing documents, reports, and communication materials. An understanding of and sensitivity to diversity issues. Excellent research skills, with an ability to conduct basic analysis of research data. Demonstrated computer literacy with Microsoft Office suite (including Excel) and Endnote. Demonstrated skill in meeting and event planning0 and facilitation. Strong analytical and planning skills. Strong ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and to work effectively independently and in a team environment required.
