SLR has an opportunity for a Technical Manager - Principal Mining Engineer to join our Global Mining Advisory office in Toronto. The core of the Global Mining Advisory group is the former Roscoe Postle Associates, which was acquired by SLR in September 2019.
This position offers the opportunity to work on mining projects in a multi-discipline project team environment, develop strategic plans to target new clients as well as build on existing relationships, and provide opportunities for professional and personal growth.
Manage complex, multidisciplinary projects, in varied commodities and locations
Supervise other engineers in the delivery of consulting assignments
Participate in the development of proposals that meet client needs
Use initiative to foresee, identify, and solve complex project related or internal problems and deal with them in a timely and effective manner, escalating where necessary
Demonstrate ability to manage multiple and complex projects simultaneously
Consistently achieve financial targets and discipline-specific performance targets
Sell new projects to current clients, manage client plans for current clients. Understand and participate in Business Development, Innovation, Diversification, and other go to market initiatives, participating appropriately
Manage SLR's commercial risk through rigorous and informed review of project work and maintaining standards of excellence
Understand and articulate the needs and expectations of projects and proposals from a client point of view, including legislative and or regulatory aspects
Experience and Education:
15 or more years' experience within the mining industry including supervisory experience in an operations or construction environment
Prior consulting experience
University degree in Mining Engineering or related technical degree. Registered or qualified for registration as a Professional Engineer in Canada or the equivalent in the USA, UK, Australia, or South Africa
Possess a reputation in the industry that leads to repeat or new business.
Understanding of Underground and/or Open Pit mine design and optimization, financial modelling and analysis, mineral reserve estimation, estimation of project capital and operating costs
Advanced user of 3D mine design and scheduling software, or capable of supervising and directing other engineers in this area
Familiarity with regulatory reporting codes, commodities and deposit types, and cost estimation (either by the candidate or by directing other engineers)
Full comprehension of discipline related technical risks for mining projects and good understanding of overall risks in other disciplines
Experience in carrying out overall report peer reviews, preparing and presenting internal and external training and information workshops
Competency with basic software (Excel, Word, Power Point)
Strong analytical skills, communication skills, demonstrated ability to write reports and interact with clients
Travel 15-25% - extended periods is not the norm but may be required on occasion
