We are seeking a highly skilled, creative and detail-oriented copywriter to help support our Creative Services department. This person will spearhead the writing function within in the team, while representing the Foundation as the single source for patient ambassador stories.

About The Role

The Copywriter & Manager, Patient Ambassadors role is a full-time permanent position, reporting to the Creative Director. The role will support all of our ongoing creative copywriting needs, as well as be the single source for sourcing, securing, procuring and stewarding patient stories to be used in a variety of mediums (proposals, social, video, brochures, website, etc.). This role is an integral part of our Creative Services team, which includes graphic designers, videographer/photographers and web developers.

The successful candidate will be an adaptable team player, who can pivot between projects while maintaining a high attention to detail, as well as being collaborative and self-motivated. They will have excellent oral and written communication skills and be confident in pitching story ideas and copy messaging.

Areas of Accountability

Integrated Marketing Communications: Creative Services Copywriting

Act as primary copywriter for the Creative Services department, developing copy/content for all channels based on briefs provided
Works closely with graphic designers and/or videographers (under leadership of Creative Director) to see copywriting and story content through to final production of any medium (e.g. brochure, video, website, social, collateral, proposal, etc)
Ensures stories/content are compelling and achieve objectives as set out by the brief/strategy lead.
Will proactively or in response to a brief, identify strategic opportunities for creative storytelling that deliver on Foundation or team/event objectives.

Integrated Marketing Communications: Patient Ambassadorship

Works across the Foundation to understand needs of each business group (e.g. Lottery, Philanthropy, Events, etc.) for patient ambassadors / patient stories
Works with Cancer Centre and internal teams to identify patients who fit the needs of our ambassador stories.
Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with patients, understanding where and when a patient may best be integrated into various communications (and when they should not).
Conducts interviews, writes stories and works closely with Creative Services team (videographer, photographer, graphic designer and/or digital strategist) to see stories through to finished product.
Proactively finds unique patient stories to meet an unidentified or untapped needs.
Working with the support of Creative Services Coordinator, Manages a database of patients for outreach, including releases, etc.

Requirements

Post-secondary degree or diploma in Advertising, Communications, Marketing, Journalism or relevant work experience.
5+ years' experience as a Copywriter or Content Creator
Impeccable writing and communication skills.
Ability to think conceptually and bring new and fresh creative ideas based on briefs provided
Highly detail-oriented, with a strong understanding of the production process/work flow.
A creative eye and love for the creative process.
Actively engaged in all aspects of the writing process—including research, writing, and editing.
Experience working across multiple mediums, in both short (ad copy) and long format copy
A strong sense of discretion, sensitivity, compassion and mature judgment.
A team player who’s enthusiastic to pitch in and help when needed.
Proactive in nature; a self-starter who sees opportunity and will react to improve a situation or process.
Availability to work weekends and evenings from time to time.
Experience working in non-profit or healthcare considered an asset.
Creative advertising agency experience preferred.

Work Environment

Willingness to work flexible hours. Some after-hours work will be required
Work will take place primarily at our offices at 700 University Avenue, Toronto
