Position Summary:
This position exists in order to design complex tooling or modify existing zinc die cast component designs to produce products, that meet customer and safety specifications/requirements, with a focus on the ease of manufacturing product to specification, at the least possible cost to the Company.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
To provide manufacturing with a complete design package for tooling and equipment developed from a concept through to finish detailed drawings. The design for both tooling and equipment must focus on safety manufacturing and castability.
- Receive project outline and conceptualize design in consultation with the assigned Engineering Manager;
- Complete CAD layout of tooling/equipment ensuring the layout and all created documentation/instructions are accurate, detailed and focused on ease of manufacturing and process/production capabilities. All designs must comply with applicable safety and ergonomic standards;
- Communicate directly with the customer to negotiate castability requirements (tooling);
- Perform gate calculations (tooling) or stress/load calculations (equipment) as required;
- Generate 3D model of the die cast component (tooling) including all necessary documentation to support manufacturing;
- Check the finished design, drawings and documents for errors;
- Consult directly with the customer and/or other departments (manufacturing, purchasing, production) to resolve design issues and continually improve our products and services;
- Act as project leader/coordinator for assigned design improvement/automation projects and/or major cost reduction initiatives on new and existing tooling/equipment;
- Develop and maintain tooling and equipment standards;
- Maintain all system files and update drawings to ensure accuracy of information that is used by manufacturing;
- Support the manufacturing departments throughout the production process including facilitating pre- and post-manufacturing meetings as required;
- Identify methods to improve the design process and utilization of CAD;
- Provide support for Engineering Manager as required (Quoting new projects, supplier quotes and program management); and
- Perform Advanced Gate & Flow Analysis by mean’s of Simulation Software – MAGMA Flow.
Education & Experience Required:
- 2 year Mechanical Engineering Technician Diploma; AND
- Minimum of three (3) years’ design experience as a Tool Designer, preferably within a high precision (+/- .0002”/ .005mm) manufacturing environment; OR
- Minimum Grade 12, AND
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Tool Designer or completion of a technical apprenticeship (Toolmaker or Design) preferred
Skills & Knowledge Required:
- Intermediate level skill and working knowledge of the die cast/injection molding machine process and controls, machine safety standards (ANSI, EC) and Occupational Health & Safety standards
- Intermediate level blueprint reading and interpretation - engineering and customer drawings
- Intermediate level proficiency in Computer Aided Design (CAD), with ProE preferred
- Intermediate level mechanical aptitude skills
- Knowledge of mechanics (statics & dynamics), fluid power, thermodynamics, machine design, machining practices, electrical controls and sequencing requirements, piping, and tool makingprinciples
- Ability to use and complete conversions in both metric and imperial measurement systems
- Proficiency in College level geometry and trigonometry
- Full working knowledge of drafting practices and standards and fits and tolerances
- Fully proficient in Flow Simulation Software - MAGMA
