Working within the Operations team and reporting to the Director of Production, the Laser Machine Programmer is responsible to program and our newly acquired laser machines. He/She is responsible to guaranty a high level of precision and quality and be an actor of continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Sorts shop orders into groups according to compatibility factors, such as quantity, shape of parts, type, size, alloy and gauge of material;
  • Reads and understands Bills of Materials to select parts that must be cut;
  • Reviews shop orders to determine job specifications and nesting requirements;
  • Operates computer to lay out graphic display of parts to be machined in optimum arrangement and generates control media for laser cutting machines;
  • Creates layouts with proper machine travel to ensure most efficiency travel pattern, material utilization and reduction in setup time;
  • Efficiently operates nesting software to meet the demands of material savings objectives and Production on time deliveries;
  • Creates laser files for newly released parts and maintains revision control for legacy laser files;
  • Interacts with operators to resolve technical difficulties faced by laser processes when it pertains to nesting material issues on the lasers;
  • Addresses and assists to resolve quality issues faced by laser processes, especially during new product introduction (NPI) launches;
  • Regularly strives to improve nesting material efficiency, production on-time deliveries, integrity of laser files, laser machine cutting efficiency;
  • Follows and adheres to prescribed safety regulations and procedures when in the shop environment;
  • Monitors forecasted loads for laser and works with Production planning to level variances in production workloads;
  • Must be capable of assisting production laser operators on overcoming issues with cut quality, cut speed optimization, and general optimization of material flow through all laser processes;
  • Monitoring quality of own work and report to supervisor defective material, unusual conditions or operating difficulties;

Skills and competencies

  • Solid understanding of metal fabrication concepts and processes;
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years experience in Laser machine programming;
  • Good knowledge of Solidworks;
  • Trumpf experience an asset;
  • Must be able to read blueprints;
  • Must have attention to detail;
  • Must be able to navigate in a Windows based computer environment;
  • Understand basic tool functions;
  • Ability to maintain organization;
  • Hand eye coordination;
  • Good communication verbally and in writing with co-workers, supervisors and others in a collaborative team environment;
  • Good math skills: able to add, subtract, multiply and divide as well as work with fractions, decimals and percentages;
  • Ability to follow moderately complex instructions and directions. Requires the ability to decide on a course or sequence of actions;
  • Ability to learn new processes as required.
