THE OPPORTUNITY

The Signal Hill Campus, featuring the Emera Innovation Exchange, is the premier innovation and public engagement platform and conference facility for Memorial University operating seven days a week. It provides graduate student residences and provides space to university and external organizations. The campus includes Memorial’s Genesis Centre, Gardiner Centre, Harris Centre, the Office of Public Engagement and Johnson Geo Centre. Reporting to the Associate Vice-President (Public Engagement and External Relations), you will be a member of the AVP’s senior leadership team, working collaboratively with other unit leads to support the Office of Public Engagement and its mandate.

As Director, you will grow the conference services business in support of Memorial’s teaching and learning, research and public engagement frameworks, building relationships with the academy across all campuses and with external partners. This includes providing a variety of services and support for: conference and event production ranging from full conference execution to a la carte services and room bookings for both St. John’s Campus and Signal Hill Campus facilities; coordination of events hosted by the President; Signal Hill Accommodations (graduate student residences); Memorial University units and external organizations based at the Signal Hill Campus; and public engagement. You will be accountable for achieving revenue targets consistent with the business model to recover operational costs and provide funding for Memorial public engagement, innovation and entrepreneurship programs.

You will oversee operations of the Signal Hill facility. You will manage service agreements with external vendors, such as software and catering vendors. You will manage tenant agreements and relations and work with co-located Memorial units to ensure effective policies are established and maintained.

In collaboration with the university community, as Director, you will facilitate and support the strategy and long-term approach to advance public engagement utilizing the Signal Hill Campus. You will establish and manage advisory committees consisting of internal and external stakeholders for various aspects of the Signal Hill Campus operations.

THE CANDIDATE

You are a strategic thinker with well-developed business acumen and a proven record of operations management and developing customer relationships, with experience in conference and event services. You are passionate about public engagement. You possess a solid understanding of budgets, financial management and revenue development models. Experience navigating the administrative and operational aspects of a university or similar institutions is an asset.

You have superior communication and interpersonal skills and are able to build strong teams to strengthen organizational health within a constantly evolving structure. An effective project and change manager, you have a collaborative approach, motivating, inspiring, and guiding people to achieve service excellence. You are focused on realizing results and committed to continuous improvement. You possess a graduate level degree (or equivalent education and experience) in business or a related field.

This position requires occasional travel and flexible working hours.

SALARY $85,454 - $112,440 per annum (Senior Management Scale)
