The Kelowna Culture Days Festival Project Assistant will work under the direction and supervision of the Kelowna Culture Days Project Manager. The incumbent will provide valuable assistance to the Festival Project Manager, Advisory Committee and RCA staff members in program development, coordination and administration; outreach to and networking of artists and arts and cultural organisations; and public engagement and marketing initiatives during June 24th to August 30th, 2019.

About Culture Days in Kelowna

Culture Days is the largest national awareness campaign to support arts and culture in Canadian history. Joining and localising the national Culture Days initiative, Kelowna Culture Days Festival will create a special weekend of September 27-29, 2019, offering a number of free interactive activities along with visual and performing arts presentations to the public in the Cultural District in Downtown Kelowna. In the process, the project will bring local artists, arts and cultural organisations together to collaborate on developing festival programs and creating and implementing arts and culture awareness campaigns between June through September 2019. The project goal is to enhance cultural vibrancy and raise the cultural profile of Kelowna through successful and meaningful collaboration in the local arts and cultural community. The Rotary Centre for the Arts (RCA) as the festival hub will facilitate the collaboration of the local arts and cultural community on festival programming, provide free space for activities and visual and performing arts presentations by participating artists and organisations, and develop and distribute promotional material.

Specific roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Culture Days Project Manager in reaching out to local artists and arts and cultural organisations and facilitating collaboration on festival visioning and programming
  • Work closely with the Culture Days Project Manager, RCA Staff Team, Steering Committee and Subcommittees to coordinate Kelowna Culture Days programs and activities, secure business sponsorship and develop public engagement strategies and promotional materials including web pages, posters, social media campaigns etc.
  • Create resources and content for activity organisers and provide additional support as required
  • Collect, write and share stories about Culture Days via social networks, the Culture Days blog, newsletter and website
  • Develop content for Culture Days social media platforms
  • Assist with website updates
  • Plan and manage event logistics
  • Recruit and coordinate on-site volunteers
  • Be a positive influence and advocate of the arts and the RCA
  • Accept the goals and objectives of the RCA and work to achieve them
  • Take part in all training or in-service activities to develop proficiency required in performing job responsibilities
  • Attend staff meetings, promptly and prepared
  • Be an active participant in program and project analysis providing constructive and proactive feedback for program adjustments and improvements
  • Maintain positive relationships, open communication with RCA staff members, participants, and volunteers


This opportunity is part of the Canada Summer Jobs program and as such the Rotary Centre for the Arts is committed to providing skills development and mentoring opportunities to individual(s) hired. At the beginning of employment, our HR staff and the Project Manager will sit down with each youth worker to help them identify their personal and professional goals that they hope to achieve during this employment opportunity. In addition an RCA staff member will be assigned as a mentor to each candidate hired to help them develop their skills pursuant to their goals.


The desired candidate(s) for this opportunity would be a post-secondary student or post-secondary graduate with a degree in art history, visual or performing art, art administration, community development, event/festival planning or other related disciplines. In addition the desired candidate(s) must meet the following requirements:

  • Be between 18 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
  • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
