The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Leader – Specialty East will be responsible for ensuring compliance with Sysco’s corporate vision for EHS commitments, goals, and approaches by implementing Sysco’s EHS program and management system. Maintain excellent relationships with front line workers and all levels of management to support corporate and specialty business objectives. Implement the overall EHS process including: environmental, occupational health and safety, fleet safety, contractor management, and transportation compliance through a multi-functional team as well as an EHS team of National EHS Director,
National Work Health Manager, and Regional EHS Directors and Leaders. This role will be responsible for three locations with frequent travel to each: Derma Meat Co. in Vaghaun, ON; En Gros Pierre in Saint-Laurent, QC; and Grande Vallée in Laval, QC.
Assist with the development, implementation and maintenance of an EHS management system: o Perform hazard assessments and complete reports o Develop and present site-specific training programs o Conduct internal site audits, develop reports and maintain records o Support external audits and progression of corrective action compliance
Assist in the development of standardized safety systems, policies, training, safety campaigns and programs to prevent injury and ensure compliance with Federal, Provincial and municipal laws.
Align with Sysco Corporation to implement the corporate EHS strategy.
Design safety methods to motivate and influence the creation of a world class safety culture.
Implement standardized, actionable safety metrics and communication protocol to leadership teams to drive safety improvement.
Create a network of internal and external alliances to develop and implement EHS policies, programs, procedures, standards, training and processes.
Create synergy and leverage the knowledge, personnel and resources of the EHS, Production,
Warehouse, Claims, Facilities, and Human Resources Teams.
Maintain awareness of potential pending and current legislation that may impact safety standards, programs and initiatives.
Monitor and communicate regulatory changes to the organization, recommending changes to result in compliance and provide technical support when needed.
Ensure accident prevention/abatement through detailed injury and accident reporting, loss analysis and trending and investigation compliance.
Analyze trends that increase injury and accident frequency/severity; develop and direct the implementation of training programs using the appropriate media.
Work with Provincial regulatory officials to resolve any compliance or practice violations.
Evaluate programs to reduce loss, recommending and implementing programs for improvement.
Implement and support provincial prevention rebate programs/audits (e.g. Safety Groups/COR).
Provide support to customers by ensuring contractor safety, and conducting on-site job hazard assessments.
Other duties as assigned by the National EHS Director.
Bachelor’s Degree is strongly required for this position with major course work in EHS, Risk
Management, or a closely related field.
Applicants must be fluent in both English and French to be considered.
Applicants must be able to travel frequently between Ontario and Quebec locations, up to 50% of the time.
Six sigma methodology certification and practice highly valued.
Has attained or is able to attain Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation. The
National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) and other professionally recognized certifications in the safety, risk management related field are highly desirable.
5+ years of EHS program management experience.
Strong knowledge of applicable Environmental and Health and Safety regulatory requirements.
Knowledge of principles and practices of business management including: supervision; assigning, evaluating, and modifying work functions and processes of executing programs; content and formatting of reports and presentations.
Strong background in EHS with a proven record of results.
Actively drives performance and urgently strives to strategically solve problems and follow projects through to completion, integrated and balanced with the big-picture strategy.
Excellent leadership and team building skills, able to influence decision makers.
