The University of Victoria is recognized as one of Canada’s leading universities and ranks among the world’s best higher education institutions. With over 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 900 full time faculty, it is a research-intensive university, committed to outstanding teaching, dynamic learning experiences for students, and research with vital impact. Large enough to have international reach, it is also small enough to offer a welcoming and collegial learning and working environment.

The Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR), formerly the Centre for Addictions Research of BC, is a network of individuals and groups dedicated to the study of substance use and addiction in support of community-wide efforts to promote health and reduce harm.

CISUR was created in 2003 with a $10.55-million endowment. Today, the Institute is a national and international research leader. The endowment now sits at $12.5-million and in 2017 the Institute secured $5.4-million in external research funding, had 75 peer-reviewed publications and 1,600+ citations. The Institute’s research is used to inform a broad range of projects, reports, publications and initiatives aimed at providing all people in BC and beyond with access to happier, healthier lives, whether using substances or not. The Institute is a cross-campus research centre and the Director reports directly to the Associate Vice President Research.

With the retirement of the incumbent, the University is now conducting an international search for a new Director for CISUR. The ideal candidate will be a recognized leader in the field of substance use research and has ideally worked across several thematic areas related to substance use. This person will be committed to collegiality, collaboration, and transparency. Through strong people skills, an inclusive approach and respect for diversity, they are a proven relationship- and community-builder. The ideal candidate will be appointable as a tenured regular faculty member at the University of Victoria. The Director position is a 5-year term with the possibility for additional terms.

International and interdisciplinary in its perspective, UVic is a diverse and welcoming learning community, located next to the Pacific Ocean in a setting known for its outstanding beauty and quality of life.
