McMaster Children's Hospital’s (MCH) Child and Youth Mental Health Program (CYMHP) is one of Canada’s largest pediatric mental health service providers. Mandated to provide care for both local and regional patients, CYMHP offers a wide range of services for children, youth, and families experiencing complex mental health concerns. Our program includes emergency mental health services, a 22-bed inpatient unit, a day treatment program, and outpatient services.

As part of the Child and Youth Mental Health Program, the team provides specialized mental health assessment and treatment for children and youth 0 -18 years of age, living in South Central Ontario. Consultation, second opinion, bridging, and treatment services are provided as indicated to those requiring more urgent or specialized service than available from their local provider.
Working within the context of a multidisciplinary team, and utilizing a patient and family-centered approach, the MCH MUMC CYMHP Social Worker conducts mental health assessments and/or provides case management and /or treatment to children, youth and their families, often on an urgent basis to high acuity patients. The Social Worker delivers a range of evidence-based treatment to individuals and families including cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI) and emotion-focused family therapy (EFFT). The Social Worker contributes to new and ongoing research and quality assurance projects, and provides consultation/liaison to other hospital-based teams and community agencies. The Social Worker provides education to the public and other professionals on issues relevant to the field of child and youth mental health.
Schedule Work Hours
Monday to Friday; days, evenings
1. Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work from an accredited School of Social Work.
2. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
3. Expertise in a range of therapeutic modalities and evidence based assessment and treatment of children, youth and their families including cognitive-behavioural therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing and emotion-focused family therapy, as demonstrated by a minimum of one year within the last two years of relevant experience in a tertiary, hospital-based mental health setting serving a pediatric mental health population.
4. Expert knowledge of community-based resources in mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice within the region.
5. Demonstrated expertise and strong knowledge base in the occurrence and range of child and youth mental health disorders and difficulties.
6. Demonstrated proficiency in report writing relating to assessment, consultation and treatment services.
7. Excellent written and verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills.
8. Demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
9. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team.
