Willows Construction is currently looking for drivers (Class 1) to join our team in Drayton Valley, Alberta.

The selected candidate will be operating trucks from our office in Drayton Valley, Alberta. As an experienced driver, you will be reporting to site supervisors or dispatch. Operating of vehicles can be overseen by the Chief Operations Officer or the HSE Coordinator for operation or safety compliance.

The applicant will have good knowledge of the requirements needed to drive commercial hauling vehicles for the purpose of transporting equipment or aggregate to various locations. Showing a willingness to follow instructions and learn improvements on equipment operations will advance the worker to greater work site responsibilities.


Understanding driving commercial vehicles in a safe and efficient manner according to all relevant legislation, policies and procedures shows experience and competency on the equipment. We would like to have a driver that understands having clean vehicles and trailers is part of the job as well as taking instructions and working as part of a team. Respectful driving and a demonstration of defensive driving is a very relevant part of the position.

The safe operation of the trucks and proper handling of the loads is of main importance to the position.

Typical Activities/Tasks

The daily task of transporting equipment or supplies to sites in integral to the operations. It is critical to understand all directions given by dispatch or supervisors. The safe operation of the equipment is your first priority, including utilizing hands-free units for communications and ensuring “dash-cam” is operational on every trip. Daily inspections of units as well as proper handling and control of trucks.

Compliance with all provincial legislation, company policies and procedures and client requirements is a necessity to performing daily duties. Punctuality, respect of co-workers, cleanliness of equipment and tools and suggestions by employees all form a positive culture that Willows Construction strives for in the workplace.

The driver is expected to report for work as directed by the dispatcher or site supervisor. The following are also expected responsibilities of the driver:

  • Complete necessary inspections of full unit including trailer and loads.
  • Report any operational deficiencies to dispatch
  • Complete daily and task safe work assessments.
  • Follow company policies and procedures, including completion of necessary inspections and documentation.
  • Follow all provincial and municipal regulations regarding the safe driving of commercial vehicles.
  • Complete necessary logs and tickets as required.
  • Report all first aid and incidents to dispatch.
  • Operate the equipment respectfully and abide by all speed limits and highway regulations.
  • Submit tickets and all paperwork at end of the day to the office.
  • Maintain a clean vehicle inside and out.
  • And duties as required.

Scope of the Position

The driver must be able to take instructions as given, provide feedback and demonstrate proper operation of vehicles to complete assigned task(s). Physical labour and lifting may also be required. Reporting to dispatch regularly throughout the day is key to maintaining a strong flow of work assignments.


Ensure equipment readiness

  • The driver must ensure that daily inspections have been completed on the trucks, trailers and any load, reporting any deficiencies to the shop mechanic.
  • The equipment is cleaned regularly of any interior garbage as well as the exterior is cleared of mud and debris.

Ensure safety requirements (Provincial, Company, Client) are met

  • Have necessary Person Protective Equipment clean and ready for daily use. The worker is responsible for supplying leather work gloves, high visibility vest and CSA approved work boots with minimum 6” ankle support.
  • All safety equipment is in good condition and is used properly.
  • Able to install tire chains.
  • Any concerns with the safe operation of vehicles or the awareness of any unsafe work or acts are reported immediately to the site supervisor.
  • All first aid and any incidents are reported and necessary documentation is completed and presented to the site supervisor.

Ensure completion of task/projects done within timeline

  • It is expected of the driver to complete assigned tasks within the time period given by the supervisor. If unable, ensure the supervisor is advised timely to provide alternative directions or assistance.

Provide necessary documentation

  • Documentation is required to show completion of inspections of all equipment, tools and vehicles.
  • Hazard assessments and pre-job safety meetings are to be documented and signed off prior to commencing work.
  • Any first aid or work site incidents are to be reported in to your supervisor immediately and necessary reports completed.
  • Time records are properly completed, signed off by supervisor and turned into office for payroll processing.

Key Relationships

Equipment Operators/Labourers: On a daily basis to ensure proper placement of loads

Yard Coordinator/Mechanic: On a daily basis for placement of equipment in yard or mechanical difficiencies.

Mentors/Site Supervisor: On a daily basis to ensure proper completion of tasks.

Chief Operations Officer: On a daily basis to receive hauling assignments and work requirements. For submission of payroll documents.

HSE/HR Coordinator: On a weekly basis to assess work site safety.

Other Key Skills or Knowledge

  • Demonstrated experience showing skill of driving including respecting of other drivers and defensive driving skills.
  • Selected applicant may be required to successfully pass a pre-employment, client requested, post-incident or random Drug and Alcohol Tests. Negative results from these tests may result in the applicant not obtaining a position or being removed from work sites.
  • Pre-employment physical demand testing may be required.
