Wildfire Management (WFM) Branch is seeking a self-motivated, effective communicator to join the staff of the Safety Unit as a Provincial Safety Advisor.

Headquartered in Prince Albert, the Provincial Safety Advisor position will play a key role in achieving the Ministry’s goal of Mission Zero, including continuous improvements in health and safety performance to reduce incidents. In this position, you will be part of a team responsible for the development, coordination and delivery for the WFM safety training and risk management programs.

This position requires knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety fundamentals, principles and legislation along with an in depth understanding of wildland fire operations, prevention, pre-suppression, preparedness, suppression techniques and fire behaviour in order to develop and deliver required safety training material and associated safety programming.

You will be required to:
Conduct incident investigations and workplace inspections including on active wildfire incidents independently or as part of a team;
Conduct internal safety training, course reviews and evaluate external safety training agencies;
Provide advice and interpretation of safety policies, safe work practices and OH&S legislation regarding safety issues to Occupational health committees, managers, supervisors and workers;
Conduct assessments and evaluations of risk management issues related to work place and fire operations safety which requires experience in hazard identification, risk assessment and safety controls used in wildfire operations;
Participate in the development of safety policies, safe work practices, safety bulletins, safety training course materials and performance measurement indicators for the safety program; and
Coordinate, schedule and deliver education and safety related health programs such as hearing loss prevention, fitness and ergonomics.
Excellent communication and relationship building skills are critical to the success of the position. You will be customer service oriented and possess strong facilitation, presentation and computer skills.

To succeed in this role, you must possess a certificate or diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution such as a diploma in Forest Ecosystem Technology or Occupational Health and Safety, or a relevant, related diploma, or university degree, along with a minimum of 3 years' experience on a wildland fire crew. Eligibility for registration with either the Saskatchewan Association of Forestry Professionals or the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals will be considered an asset.

This position will be required to regularly travel to remote locations and multiple worksites within the province and as such a valid class 5 Saskatchewan Drivers licence is required and must be maintained.
