Job Summary

This position is 60% responsible for overseeing the performance of the UBC Press Marketing Department in meeting its goals for: resource allocation (including HR); promotional activities; sales revenue (including export); departmental budgeting; sales and distribution infrastructure; data management; agency list marketing; and profile-raising liaison with UBC. Additionally, 40% of the position is, in conjunction with the UBC Press director, responsible for business development as a strategic expansion of UBC Press's current activities and existing revenue channels.

Organizational Status

UBC Press is a fee-for-service unit reporting to the Vice President Research and Innovation. It is one of Canada's principal scholarly book publishers and is responsible for all book publications in Canada and abroad under the following imprints: UBC Press: On Point Press; Purich Books; On Campus; and Pacific Educational Press. UBC Press publishes approximately 60 new books each year and also acts as the marketing and distribution agent for 10+ US and UK publishers. It has editorial offices in Kelowna and Toronto. The Press has four major functions: editorial acquisition (editorial department); editing and production (production department); sales, marketing and distribution (marketing department); and administration and financial management (Administration and Finance Department.) Each functional area traditionally has an assistant director as its senior manager.

The Assistant Director, Marketing & Strategic Business Development, is a new role designed to leverage marketing expertise for business development in areas relating to publishing, publishing services, and content creation.

As head of the marketing department, the position has six direct reports and one indirect report. In the role of strategic business development, the position currently has no direct or indirect reports.

Work Performed

Marketing (60%)
  • Establishes departmental goals and benchmarks in response to the Press's strategic priorities;
  • Develops and oversees the preparation of forecasts, budgets, and strategic plans for international and national sales, marketing, and publicity initiatives;
  • Monitors the impact and revenue outcomes of promotional, special sales, and publicity campaigns;
  • Oversees the scope and focus of UBC Press's digital marketing activities, including digital strategies for specific books or campaigns (special offers, online contents, and the like), with the goal to increase on an annual basis the Press's direct-to-consumer sales;
  • Sets the operational activities related to agency business (university presses and publishers in US, UK, and abroad). Negotiates agency contracts and is responsible for ensuring the continued and efficient fulfilment of all obligations therein;
  • Oversees the global distribution operations for UBC Press. Appoints distributors for the Press and supervises other managers to ensure that order fulfilment occurs in a manner that maximizes the sales of UBC Press books and those of its agencies;
  • Works to maintain a strong business relationship with major retail and online retail accounts, as well library wholesalers, digital aggregators, and special in-house accounts;
  • Ensures that the Press's metadata is of high quality and distributed effectively;
  • Manages all HR-related matters in the marketing department, including recruitment, training, regular reviews, delegation of responsibility, motivation to meet objectives, and terminations;
  • Provides support and mentoring for departmental managers;
  • Seeks out and pursues funding opportunities to enhance and/or underwrite the Presses promotional activities, with an emphasis on export initiatives;
  • Builds the Press's on-campus reputation through collaborative and profile-raising initiatives;
  • Represents UBC Press in publishing associations and related entities in Canada and abroad; and
  • Designs and implements long term sales and marketing strategies for the continued success of UBC Press.
Strategic Business Development (40%)
  • Takes a leadership role, in collaboration with the UBC Press director, in identifying, researching, and assessing new publishing-related business activities that are appropriate to need and responsive to opportunity;
  • Seeks out strategic partnerships, new business development opportunities, alternative publishing channels, publishing services models, and new technology applications to maximize service both to content providers and to customers, and to optimize the revenue potential and business success of UBC Press. Maintains and develops existing partnerships to achieve these same ends.
  • Keeps abreast of changing business models and trends┬┐domestically and internationally┬┐within publishing, post-secondary institutions, research institutions, libraries, scholarly communications, and so forth;
  • Develops, in conjunction with the Assistant Director, Finance, a detailed and robust business case to assess each potential business opportunity;
  • Models outreach to potential partners and stakeholders to complement UBC Press's overall strategic goals;
  • Devises an implementation plan for integrating new business opportunities into existing organizational structure of the Press;
  • Communicates business development outcomes to colleagues, in collaboration with the UBC Press director, using the Prosci's ADKAR model or a similar change management methodology;
  • Co-leads, with the UBC Press director, a press-wide strategic planning campaign to develop a strategic roadmap, overall business plan, benchmark assessments, budget, and timeline to achieve the financial metrics necessary to support the Press's broader strategic goals;
  • Helps implement the strategic roadmap with the goal of increasing turnover from $4M to $5M within 5 years; and
  • Ensures that all business development activity is conducted in compliance with the governance and procedural requirements of the University of British Columbia, and that all activity undertaken serves the University's best interests and enhances its reputation.

Reports to the Director. Acts independently. Develops an annual plan and is reviewed on that basis, and with regard to long term goals.

Directly supervises six staff members based in the Vancouver office, and one staff member in Ontario.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the planning for all sales and marketing activities related to publications produced by, or represented by, UBC Press, an organization with sales revenues in excess of four million dollars. Business development is a critical next stage in the Press's business growth from being a small specialized publisher heavily dependent on government and institutional grants, towards becoming a mid-sized publisher with diverse imprints and a suite of business activities that mitigate its dependence on external grants. Failure to undertake the work outlined above in a responsible, timely, and effective manner could result in serious financial losses and/or damage to the reputation of the University and therefore jeopardize the well-being and viability of UBC Press.


Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. - Post-secondary degree Minimum of six years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. - Proven success in business development
