Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the Michael Smith Laboratory's IT services that include the operational areas of computer services and audio-visual services. Performs day to day network administration, website administration, computer/equipment hardware, software support, and training for the Michael Smith Laboratories (approximately 300+ users and 600+ devices/servers). Develops and adheres to the philosophy of infrastructure as code with continuous integration for all internally developed projects.
This position reports to the Senior IT Manager and supports the delivery of both IT services to the department and research groups. They will interact with faculty, staff, graduates, undergraduates, and visiting scientists. Provides outreach and interoperates with other research departmental teams on campus.
- Support a wide variety of desktop and research specific software for Linux, MacOSX, and Windows operating systems. Some of the software and/or packages are very unique and niche to a particular research focus.
- Deploy and develop software automation with continuous integration using SaltStack and Git software version control for departmental and research IT systems.
- Plans and performs global configuration changes or module deployments for enterprise or complex applications.
- Integrates vendor supplied applications with existing infrastructure and applications through custom interfaces and components.
- Develops internal and inter-departmental software solutions for multiple operating system platforms including Windows, MacOSX, and Linux.
- Supports physical and virtual servers. Provides technical leadership on installation, implementation, maintenance, and repair.
- Analyze end-user requirements to provide software and hardware purchase recommendations.
- Deploy, repair, re-purpose, and retire department desktops, laptops, and other computing devices.
- Responsible for planning, implementing, integrating, and customizing enterprise web applications using proprietary and open source software.
- Coordinates and monitors the status of all web applications. Analyze testing requirements and conducts functional and quality testing.
- Investigates bug reports, determines their priority and validity, and communicates relevant information. This includes the main department websites, individual lab websites, numerous internal and external facing web applications.
- Responsible for supporting room AV systems, video conference systems, recordings, and meeting rooms equipped with projectors, televisions, and related e-learning equipment.
- Assists in the development of IT related plans, manages, and modifies the department information technology related security policies to ensure both systems and staff are compliant with regulatory requirements and guidelines set by the University of British Columbia and province of British Columbia.
- Provides operational support of department networks and firewalls.
- Advises in the development of operational systems and procedures to ensure that department clients receive the highest levels of service.
- Analyzes requirements of users, determines project timelines, outlines workflows, reviews progress, and determines operational priorities on delegated projects.
- Develops and delivers effective IT training presentations and workshops.
- Provides client documentation and training based on internal operating procedures and workflows.
- Develops internal IT and end user technical documentation. This encompasses both systems documentation and end user tutorials and training instructional manuals.
- Interface with Compute Canada and other external groups to assist our researchers in accessing and using their services.
- Assists in e-waste handling and secure destroy of hard drives.
The position will work independently but receives direct supervision from the Senior IT Manager of the Michael Smith Laboratories. Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of specific task objectives.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Decisions and actions will have a direct impact on how efficiently and effectively departmental applications will perform and function. Errors in judgment, poor development, or failure to act decisively could have a detrimental effect on these applications, result in data loss or exposure of personal information and could significantly impact the educational and research mission of the department and damage UBC's reputation.
Poor quality of work will result in systems with usability issues that will lead to user dissatisfaction and frustration. Work will involve sensitive data and it is expected to follow all UBC Information Security Standards, and to exercise judgment, diplomacy, and tact in all interactions.
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. University degree in Computer Science with relevant training or significant experience in the appropriate computer systems and applications, or a technical diploma in computer related discipline. Minimum of two years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. In-depth knowledge of applications and the business requirements supporting them or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of, and experience supporting Red Hat/CentOS/Ubuntu Linux, Microsoft Windows Server, virtualization using KVM/LibVirt/VMWare, network stack, complex storage systems, database systems, scripting and programming languages (Python, Perl, Bash, Java, Powershell, PHP, etc). Demonstrated knowledge of Information Technology, with emphasis on offering Infrastructure as a service, virtualization, storage, web hosting and private and public clouds. .
