The Vice-President will provide leadership for all aspects of Taggart Construction Limited's construction projects in the City of Kingston and surrounding areas. The Vice-President will be responsible to manage and develop the team responsible for tendering, pre-construction planning and development, equipment, construction performance and customer relations. These duties must be performed while ensuring high standards of workmanship, safety and efficiency. All responsibilities must be performed in a manner consistent with the Taggart Construction Limited vision, mission, and must comply with all company policies and procedures.
The ideal candidate will have experience in all aspects of heavy civil construction, is an innovative leader, and will be available to fill this role no later than January 2020.
Leadership and Management:
Oversee all aspects of Kingston operations, including the tendering of projects, estimating, project management and site execution.
Lead a team of direct and indirect reports, including providing day to day guidance, monitoring performance, providing feedback and taking corrective action as needed.
Maintain effective labour relations through compliance with company policies, labour agreements, and resolution of employee grievances and fair treatment of employees, while working collaboratively with the Human Resources Department.
In conjunction with the Labour Relations Manager, work with the appropriate unions with regards to union hiring needs and collective agreement bargaining.
Challenge the status quo and push for more creative and effective solutions in all aspects of the business.
Support business development by building strong relationships with clients, maintaining regular contact to understand their current and future needs. Bring forward leads to sister companies.
Build strong relationships with prospective clients, pursuing former clients and new ones at all times, example new general contractors, consultants or home builders that we could service.
Prepare and monitor Kingston division operational budget.
Analyze opportunities and review legal scenarios in regards to risk management.
Demonstrate and advocate for a high regard for health and safety practices across all aspects of the business. Liaise with the Health and Safety department to support the division's needs.
Support business transformation initiatives such as the implementation of new technology and processes across all lines of the business.
Be an active leader in our industry, participate in committees or a become a member of various associations that are relevant to our industry and business.
Stay attuned to industry best practices, trends, compliance requirements and changes that affect the business. Make recommendations for changes to our business practices.
Serve as a representative and spokesperson for the Taggart Construction Brand at community events or networking events.
Project Management and Estimating:
Assist Estimating team determine which projects will be tendered (bid/no-bid), including determining the pricing model.
Oversee the preparation of cost estimates for all projects.
Review and make recommendations to existing and proposed designs.
Review the project bid plan and make strategic recommendations to proposed schedules, including use of resources (human, equipment, etc. )
Support Project Managers by reviewing and making recommendations to existing and proposed designs, contracts, timelines, meeting with stakeholders, and compliance aspects of all projects (codes, regulations, etc.)
Site Management and Equipment:
Support the planning and implementation of the initial mobilization and set up of the construction site.
Along with the Project Managers, perform periodic field inspections.
Ensure all employees and sub-trades are following processes ad policies of the Company and legislative bodies.
Consistently monitor and analyze the use of resources (human and equipment).
Budgeting and Reporting:
Review and present complex technical reports and recommendations and perform necessary research or investigation.
Oversee and coordinate equipment maintenance with shop staff while ensuring decisions are financially sound.
Other duties as assigned.
Statement of Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A minimum of 15 years of related experience in the civil construction industry, with a minimum of five years of experience in a senior management role, including experience managing a multi-disciplinary team.
Post-secondary degree in Engineering or a related field is required.
Knowledge of local , provincial and federal workplace compliance regulations, ordinances and legislation.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, with various stakeholders.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and manage difficult situations.
Able to read and challenge blueprints, schematics, field drawings and plans.
Experience creating, tracking and revising project and operational budgets.
Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
The candidate will possess strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
The candidate will possess a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality .
The role requires a self-starter and an independent thinker.
Strong knowledge of technology, with the ability to implement and promote new technologies.
Physical/Sensory Effort/Work Environment
Providing service to several people or department, working under many simultaneous deadlines.
Sitting or standing for long periods of time at workstation.
Valid driver's license with access to a vehicle for the purposes of conduction regular site visits, and occasional travel to Ottawa to meetings and/or training.
Overtime will be required on an as needed basis to meet the demands of projects and deadlines.
