Business and specialized lending is a material department of Manulife Bank and Trust. In aggregate, the team employs in excess of 40 staff members and holds a portfolio that exceeds $2 billion. The content of the portfolio is spread across various market segments such as insurance leverage lending, commercial real estate lending, business acquisition lending, investment loans and miscellaneous secured lines of credit. Account Management is a critical department within the overall specialized lending team. Account management is tasked with underwriting and executing new money applications, and maintain proper risk management practices and on-going portfolio oversight by completing annual reviews of existing files.
Reporting to the Director - Business and Specialized Lending, this position is responsible for timely and effectively underwriting of new, commercial loan applications in three product domains (ie: insurance leveraged lending, business acquisition loans, commercial real estate). This is done via assessment of industry, business and financial risks, financial analysis, deal structuring, security analysis, cashflow projection and documentation facilitation in accordance with Bank underwriting policies. Secondary responsibilities include documenting commitment letters and funding facilitation. Complete and timely underwriting of new money applications delivers on two key tasks for the Bank. They are:
Execution of sound risk management practices for facilitation of prudent lending in compliance with Bank lending policies. Delivering a superior customer experience thereby augmenting the probability that the Bank be awarded said underwritten file.
Deal structuring based on client information and necessary product type.
Preparation of internal risk rating using appropriate product specific modelling.
Financial analysis of current and past client provided financial disclosures.
Identify key transaction risks and determine key mitigants.
Application write up.
Negotiation of various transactions (commercial in nature).
Professional level client interaction & advisor interaction.
Commitment letter preparation, deal closing, funding facilitation.
Key Shared Accountabilities:
Coaching of junior staff, educating commercial sales reps, mentoring colleagues, on-going training (of new staff, new sales reps, etc).
Ad hoc reporting including but not limited to exception tracking, counter party risk tracking, top 20 exposure tracking, maintenance of the commercial loan origination system.
5-10 years of commercial banking/lending experience.
Minimum Bachelor degree in commerce/economics/accounting.
Good understanding of real estate lending is an asset.
Good understanding of life insurance concepts is an asset.
Functional French language skills are an asset.
Strong computer skills (ie: excel, word, amortization table modelling).
Strong interpersonal skills and client centric perspective.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
