Residential Support Worker - Toronto

Relief

The Residential Counsellor will be working in a group home which is home to 10 adults with severe and prolonged mental illness. The counsellor will participate in a multi-disciplinary team, whose function is to provide appropriate support, social development and life skills training for residents of housing provided by Bayview Community Services, a division of Good Shepherd Non-Profit Homes. The Residential Counsellor serves as a role model and resource person for residents.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative

  • Keeps supervisor informed of developments and changes in the group home and with residents on a daily basis.
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining records for the program, including case notes on residents.
  • Assists in the general maintenance and upkeep of the property, both inside and out.
  • May participate in program planning and evaluation.
  • Actively maintains good community relations.

Program

  • Provides guidance for residents, acting as a Mental Health Counsellor, resource person and role model for them.
  • Provides consultation, life skills coaching and support for residents.
  • Acts as liaison with referring agents or therapists offering feedback on progress of residents.
  • May participate in admission, review, discharge planning and case management.
  • Encourages residents to set realistic goals for further development, through joint assessment.
  • Assists residents to work toward their self-development goals of more independent living by encouraging them to share skills with each other, and by teaching them new skills in the areas of socialization, money management, cooking and home maintenance.
  • Assists residents in achieving recreational, educational and vocational goals.
  • Encourages residents to be actively involved in community groups and organizations.
  • Ensures residents have up to date personal crisis plans and printed options for emergencies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Formal Education - Post secondary education, preferably related to the Mental Health field.

Personal Qualities - Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team, ability to communicate clearly, ability to work under pressure, flexibility and a demonstrated high degree of interest in the field of health care with particular emphasis on community based programs.

Other Knowledge, Skill and Experience - Experience with ex-psychiatric patients and housing programs preferred. Knowledge of vocational, psychosocial, medical, educational, crisis care facilities and housing resources in Metro Toronto is essential. The ability to speak French or any additional language is considered an asset.
