The Opportunity:
Are you looking to join and help lead a dynamic and innovative team of journalists setting the news agenda in the City of Regina and the province of Saskatchewan? The Regina Leader-Post newsroom is looking to hire a full-time, permanent Managing Editor to lead the newsroom and drive robust, digital-first high-quality coverage. The successful candidate will lead by example, setting a high standard for our coverage across platforms, ensuring timeliness, relevance, and creative storytelling. The candidate we are looking for is both a team player and a self-starter, at ease in a deadline-oriented setting, and is accustomed to fast-paced content creation.
What you’ll do:

Oversee the local news operation; ensuring the team is on track to lead the market in breaking news and enterprise journalism

Be the first contact for public concerns with coverage and content

Work with the city editor to run the daily operations of the newsroom, including working to develop daily news and feature story ideas for both digital and print platforms, reporting to the editor in chief for Postmedia’s Saskatchewan news service

Make judgment calls and work with a unionized staff and other Saskatchewan newsroom leaders to effectively handle issues

Edit and post content to digital platforms

Lead and guide the Leader-Post’s team of reporters and columnists on local news coverage

Oversee the paper’s opinion section

Manage both freelance costs and the scheduling, payroll, overtime and vacation schedule

Have a hands-on role in reporter and photographer hirings and discipline, as necessary.
Qualifications
- A journalism graduate with a minimum of seven years of experience at a daily news operation, with proven experience in a leadership role, including mentoring and coaching skills

Demonstrable strengths in managing people and projects with a proven track record of managing and inspiring teams, including performance reviews and regular check-in with remote staff

Superior editing skills and proven news judgment

Familiarity with emerging digital trends and know how to leverage social media and digital platforms to break news and reach audiences

Knowledge of Canadian Press style guides and familiarity with legal issues in journalism

A familiarity with Postmedia operating systems, including WordPress, Merlin, Saxo, and Dayforce
