Job Description

Basic Function

The Group Controller will be responsible for leading the Controller and Financial & Regulatory Reporting groups. These two groups have the following two distinct objectives:

The Controllership group will specifically build, maintain, and manage the accounting and control environment with the proper segregation of duties and internal controls to provide data integrity and a single source of truth for financial data. Additionally, the group will be responsible for processing financial data and “owning” the general ledger.

The Financial and Regulatory Reporting group will specifically seek to be the authoritative source and expert in accounting policies. They will be responsible for the technical aspects of financial reporting (internal, external, and regulatory) and “telling the C1 story” from a financial perspective. They will be critical to instilling confidence and building trust-based relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

As an integral leader within the Finance function, the AVP will:

Hold joint responsibility for overseeing, managing, and leading the successful execution of all finance operations
Play a pivotal role in driving the achievement of strategic objectives for the finance function

This role is critical in the transformation of Finance operating in an increased control environment and elevating the level of technical expertise and requires an incumbent with the capabilities to drive the team to realizing this transition.

Vision & Planning

Defines vision and business plan for complete function in context of corporate strategy and priorities
Within broad functional area, provides innovative solutions to broadly defined business problems
Translates Central 1 corporate strategy to the Financial and Regulatory Reporting group
Carries out strategy within functional area with authority to re-shaping the operational environment.
Leads in the creation of a broad, deep, initiatives which ensure continuous improvement of the organization’s financial internal control framework
Enhance the way the organization views and disseminates information that critically impacts Central 1 and influences business decisions


Provide Leadership and operational management to the Controllership and Financial Reporting Groups and ensure the successful execution of initiatives for each of these groups
Oversee the administration of finance technology systems
Lead Treasury administration and accounting
Ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of internal, external, and regulatory reporting
Ensuring Central 1 adequately adheres to accounting frameworks and technical accounting standards
Continuously optimize and seek improvements for key processes to ensure that data from the Controllership and the Financial Reporting functions is timely, accurate, and reliable
Monitor and evaluate information from internal data, financial reports and other key performance indicators to provide relevant, proactive information to the executive leadership and appropriate stakeholders both internal and external
Work with the information technology function to align financial systems to the day-to-day operations so data can be converted into information and reports that will provide an accurate analysis of the current and future financial picture
Implementation of finance systems and technology including new General Ledger, analytics and reporting tools
Documentation and optimization of relevant finance processes
Provide confidence in Finance’s internal controls and deliver financial data with unquestionable integrity
Responsible for the Internal Controls over Financial Reporting Program
Identify internal control weaknesses and design and implement a framework to mitigate the identified weaknesses
Implementation of new working tools to facilitate the ability to collaborate and store information

Stakeholder Management

Develop business partnering relationships throughout Central 1 and leverage those relationships when required to successfully drive initiatives forward
Ensure that the finance function is seen as a “partner with the business”, is proactive, responsive and helpful
Building trust-based relationships with regulatory and external stakeholders
Build a solid relationship with regulatory authorities
Support the CFO in representing the organization in important external business relationships with suppliers, stakeholders, and the public so that the organization’s image is reflected in the most positive manner and where such contacts are critical to the achievement of objectives
Regularly build relationships and interact with the following key areas in order to effectively enable change, Strategy, Transformation Office, Corporate IT and other divisions as required based on key initiatives planned


Advocate and support strategic initiatives that will impact Finance
Have the skills and expertise necessary to represent Finance in front of the Executive Leadership Team and other senior groups
Continuously drive change throughout the Finance function and successfully execute projects from ideation to implementation
Develop a culture of process and continuous improvement to ensure that the finance function is current with the needs of the organization, and is a role model in embracing change and demonstrating adaptability
Develop the team to gain the necessary technical expertise to properly apply accounting standards and adequately satisfy the requirements of the applicable accounting framework and regulatory bodies
Development of team members’ capabilities, particularly project leadership and management skills
Conduct performance appraisals and evaluations on a regular basis, handling issue resolution, making staffing decisions, and maintaining a working environment that retains motivated and skilled professionals


Undergraduate degree in Finance, or Business
Holds an accounting designation
10+ years of experience leading teams of varying size and across different locations
Experience in a public company reporting environment would be an asset
Strong technical accounting skills (GAAP, securities and regulatory perspectives) and solid knowledge of IFRS (knowledge of and experience with IFRS 9 is an asset)
Solid understanding of auditing and tax methodologies
Capacity to think critically about issues from a strategic perspective (options available, pros / cons of different options, proposed solution) and aptitude in researching accounting standards and related interpretive guidance
Operational (ability to translate the “what is required” into the “how it’s done”)
Problem solving (ability to “find it” and “fix it”)
Project management discipline and structure
Exceptional written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate technical and detailed information to non-finance professionals; “speaks business, not numbers”
Effective consensus building, conflict resolution, and team-building skills, including being a role model for others and imparting knowledge and experience to junior team members
Strong attention to detail
Mental and personal agility to effectively deal with ambiguity and change

Managerial/ Leadership skills

Experience and passion for leadership and development of talent; develops and builds talent and high performing teams through mentoring, feedback, and providing professional development opportunities
Leadership presence and ability to build credibility at all levels within the organization
Collaboration skills with a proven track record of driving enterprise-wide change through team and trust building
