We are currently seeking an Architectural Designer – Technical to join our Health studio in our downtown Toronto office. As an Architectural Designer – Technical you will apply and integrate technical detailing and material technologies to develop design solution into a concise set of construction documents. Using your ability to analyze and understand design intent you will produce efficient and effective technical design solutions. You will work with senior members of the design team and provide direction to junior staff in order to develop design solutions appropriate to the context, budget and aesthetic requirements of architectural projects. You will use your knowledge of detailing, building materials, building codes and construction technologies to collaborate with other professional disciplines and have opportunities to coordinate the design through all phases of the project.
Duties and Responsibilities
Project Delivery
Reviews information from reports and published documents; evaluates and analyzes the information to understand broad requirements of project
Develops complex technical designs to ensure an exemplary solution is delivered that meets quality parameters, project timelines and budgetary requirements
Performs technical reviews and edits drawings as required and reviews design requirements to offer recommendations and create architectural drawings to support constructions projects
Performs design activities such as programming, code research, material and building systems research, laying out program components and calculation of program and building areas; refines the design options and develops building details
Evaluates site conditions, including zoning requirements and site constraints; may meet with authorities having jurisdiction to establish requirements
Designs significant components of the overall building including integrating engineering design and adhering to applicable codes and jurisdictional requirements
Synthesizes, interprets and coordinates technical information to write architectural and front-end specifications for Project Manuals
Manages a library of resources, documents and master specifications to ensure information is current and can be accessed and retrieved in a timely manner
Sources all materials to be drawn and specified to ensure feasibility and to meet design intent and comply with industry standards
Performs site surveys and field reviews to accurately document existing and new construction conditions and becomes familiar with standard building techniques
Acts as a single point of contact on project issues
May act as concept designer on smaller projects
Performs complex analyses, sampling or data collection, within discipline, for specific portions of broader projects
Reviews project products, services and shop drawings to ensure adherence to project documents, relevant jurisdictional codes and corporate quality controls
Processes permit response letters and coordinates revisions with engineers and consultants, as required, to obtain necessary documentation and permits
Attends meetings to coordinate drawings and resources, determine project criteria and provide information
Tracks and reviews project products, services and shop drawings to ensure adherence to project documents, relevant jurisdictional codes and corporate quality controls
Performs site visitations to determine compliance with construction contract and relevant building and safety codes; prepares reports to document the progress; identifies any deviation from the construction contract and liaises with owner and contactor to resolve issues in a timely manner
Prepares project change documentation as required
Coordinates with contractor, sub-consultants or relevant building authorities to address and document issues with constructability or owner concerns

Project Management
Complies with accepted project management methodology; documents and manages scope, work effort, budget, cost controls, schedules, etc.
Reviews design requirements, drawings and schedules to ensure program and client requirements are met and all codes and jurisdictional requirements are complied with
Recommends opportunities for recovery of costs to ensure profitability of project

Client Management
Participates in planning with clients to prioritize activities and allocate resources consistent with project needs and objectives
Acts as an integrator of solutions; ensures a good understanding of the problem and the solution and explains the options to clients
Maintains effective dialogue with regulatory bodies and standards organizations
Attends client meetings and makes client presentations

Leadership
Works effectively in a team by supporting other team members
Oversees workloads and provides staff leadership throughout all phases of the project to ensure that work is done accurately, efficiently and complies with policies, procedures and standards, as well as best working practices
Encourages productivity, innovation, teamwork, and a high level of professionalism within own discipline and sector; leads by example

Operations
Improves timeliness of delivery without compromising quality of solutions and services
Follows safety requirements when in the field
Utilizes industry best practices and established standards to ensure production adheres to corporate and professional expectations; researches new methods
Completes administrative paperwork such as timesheets, time off requests, expenses, etc.

Business Development
Represents the organization and interacts in a professional manner with client, sub-consultant and contractor representative
Makes presentation to professional or client groups

Strategic Development
Provides insight, information and recommendations on sector and discipline trends and significant issues for review and acceptance by senior staff

Qualifications
Have successfully completed related post-secondary education
Strong proficiency in Architectural software skills (i.e. Revit and CAD)
Have between 5-7 years of project work experience in Healthcare sector; prior experience in all phases of the project cycle is required
Experience with complex renovations, decanting & enabling works, phased construction and infrastructure renewal projects are an asset
Familiarity with Mechanical, Electrical and Structural permits and building codes is required
Possess superior leadership, time management and problem solving skills
Demonstrate creativity in design
Prior experience in project management and project delivery is required
Membership with a relevant professional architectural association is an asset
