Job Summary

The role of the Animal Care Attendant (ACA) is to provide husbandry to animals in our care and maintain the hospital to our standards of cleanliness, as well as carry out limited technical and customer service functions. The overall goal is to assist the Veterinary Technicians and Veterinarians in general hospital operations, as well as aid Customer Service Representatives as needed in providing high quality customer service when interacting with clients. The purpose of this position is to help improve the calibre of care given to the patients and clients alike, and to aid in achieving greater team efficiency by helping other staff with completion of technical and administrative work. The Animal Care Attendant ensures the fulfilment of a variety of tasks and provides assistance caring for animals.

Primary job duties:

  • Restraint of animals for a variety of procedures including but not limited to blood draws, IV catheters, nail trims, physical exams, vaccines, anal gland expressions, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections
  • Vaccine preparation
  • Assist in x-ray setup and processing
  • Set up and preparation of samples and equipment for in-house diagnostics
  • Assist in maintenance of records and logs
  • Assist in maintenance of surgical and monitoring equipment and supplies
  • Assistance of Veterinary Technician(s) and/or Veterinarian(s) during medical procedures as needed
  • Assisting receptionist in answering phones; taking and passing messages on to appropriate staff member
  • Prepping client and exam rooms for Veterinarian(s) or Veterinary Technician(s)
  • Filling prescriptions
  • Restocking exam room and hospital treatment area with supplies
  • General cleaning duties as described in variety of checklists throughout hospital

Required skills:

-Strong communication skills and outgoing, positive attitude

-Excellent handle of the English language - many medical terms will need to be used in discussions with clients and other staff

-Fast learner

-Able to stay calm and organized in a fast-paced environment, does not get flustered

-Computer skills are essential for this role, a variety of programs and online portals are used

-Ability to multi-task

-Focus and attention to detail even when distractions are present (barking dogs, ringing phone)

-Strong handle of mathematics

-Able to lift up to 40lbs (bags of pet food, some pets themselves)

-Comfortable with all types of animals

-Emotional maturity and stability - will at times be exposed to sick and hurt pets, stressed clients, and humane euthanasias

-Perform other clerical duties as necessary for hospital operations.

A successful candidate will have all of these qualities and confidence in their ability to perform them. Preference may be given to those with previous veterinary experience and/or those with experience in a notably fast-paced environment. Compensation will vary depending on experience.

Required Education, Skills and Qualifications

High school diploma, college preferred, Vet Assistant diploma bonus.

Salary: $14.00 to $16.00 /hour
